Spotted: Fast German Buses/Die Schnellbusse(???)

All great. All different. Which one is for you?

Plenty of load-lugging muscle about...
Plenty of load-lugging muscle about...
You should know all about our PH fleet C63 AMG hauler by now. Well, after 24,000 blacktop-creasing miles we've had to give it back, (sigh... ) so we're wondering what else is out there that might fill the hole.

Of course the Germans are adept at producing cars which are equally at home lugging loads as they are dishing out some humiliation at the traffic light stampedes, and both the Audi RS4 Avant and BMW M5 Touring provide some stern competition for the Benz.

Fast German estates are pricey cars brand new, and relatively cheap to buy once they're six-or-seven years old. So how about something that has already suffered the lion's share of its depreciation and is still fresh in the memory?

Audi first. This '07 RS4 Avant turned up on eBay at an Audi RS specialist in Aylesbury. It appears to be in fine fettle, is loaded with toys and has had the Dynamic Ride Control issues addressed by Audi (there have been rumours that Audi have extended the warranty where the DRC is concerned for cars up to five years old), who have serviced it for all of its 55,000 miles. The be-winged Recaro Sport front seats and flat-bottomed steering wheel were both no-cost options when the car was new, although it appears that the majority of buyers prefer these in a used RS4. All the servicing is right up to date and has been carried out only by Audi dealers, and the asking price is £27,500.

Moving on, this '07 Bavarian offering from our classifieds has covered less miles than the RS4 (45,000) and is nearly three grand cheaper at £24,750, although no less well-equipped. What's more it's still in the hands of its original owner who forked out nearly £70,000 for it when it was new (including an extended warranty), and has only ever had it serviced by the supplying dealer.

This C63 AMG is from the Auto Trader classifieds. It's a year newer than the other two cars but at 77,000 miles has covered more ground. Like the other two it's brimming with options, has been looked after by main dealers and is as Chris-R has testified, these are very fast, comfortable, and capable machines.

Out of these three examples the Beemer probably gets the nod purely in terms of value for money, but of course it's not that simple because all three cars have fundamentally different characters. With the RS4 you get four wheel drive with a flexible and high-revving V8 and a conventional manual gearbox, whereas with the M5 you get a screamer of a V10 and SMG, and the C63 uses a big-capacity V8 and a slushbox.

Each car has lost the majority of their brand new value so really it comes down to which of the three floats your boat. But... is there another way? Although not strictly a German car, this Chrysler SRT-8 has Mercedes underpinnings and a healthy 425bhp. It's a 2009 car with just 1200 miles on the clock and isn't exactly wanting in the specification department. It may fall short of the other cars here in a few key areas, but for just under twenty grand and such low mileage, might it be an alternative?

I'd have the M5 but i would prefer the standard M5 wheels rather then the M6 ones. I just dont think they look right. No RS6 in the mix either ?

I'd say the RS4 would be the best all occasion car because you can add 'all-weather' to the list as well. Personally though, if it wasn't a day-to-day car may I offer up the RS2 for some Q-car greatness to lug your cool around?

ive got to second that one - wheres the RS6?

im seriously thinking about buying one at the minute, the practical car for the petrolhead - what more does a man need?

My boss has the saloon and the only feature that needs is a button for 'ludicrous speed'

RS2 better than the RS4 & cheaper to maintain.

RS4 is an expensive car to maintain.

Cheaper is still like saying silver bricks are cheaper than gold one. It's still an expensive house smile But I dare say that the RS2, as with Porsches of the time, is over engineered and pretty solid outside of the usual consumables. If I didn't do 20k miles a year I would kill for one right now.

The M5 hasn't covered less miles than the RS4, it's covered fewer.

Fewer

Slightly off topic, but rumour has it one of the German car companies used to have some highly modified minibuses that could ferry execs along the autobahns at obscene speed. Those really would be schnellbusse.

The high speed race transporter that one of them (Mercedes?) used to use in the '50s looked pretty terrifying too. IIRC it could cruise faster than the typical family saloon of the day could physically travel.

That Chrysler looks well dodgy. 2009, pre-facelift with only that number of miles????

In which case that glorious M5 Touring has depreciated to the tune of almost 1k per month. Ouch. All the better for barge-istas though thumbup

I think the 300c only goes to highlight the VFM of the other cars smile

I like the idea of one, but at far, far less monies...

Every M5 estate I've seen (that'll be about 3-4 then) has had M6 wheels - I thought they may even have been standard?

Cool - so in two years this'll be in the SOTW - like that idea a lot!! smile

A pal of mine just swapped his RS6 Avant for an E63 estate, and while he loved the surefootedness of the RS he loves his E63 far more. Which I had the choice.......

I'd pay a bit more for less miles as long as they remove the chav plate

Love these fast estates.

Too scared of the running costs though. (and I'm not talking MPGs here)

Having just cone out of a C63 i can give it high enough praise...
Only downside is the range, but in thei company its better than the M5.
Faster in a straing line and sounds better than almost any other car (think SLS)... prices have plumeted now. Mine sold for £34k with 21,000 miles.
