Due to required funds and impending arrival of company care I am going to be selling my 87000 mile V reg MX-5 1.8i S. Should I get it out the way now or wait untill the spring? I will put a years tax on in December regardless but the MOT isnt due untill June.

Could I get more for it in the spring with less MOT left and a service or in the winter with longer MOT and full years tax?

Dont remind me, saying that the 5 isnt exactly good on the motorways!

Speaking of thinly veiled adverts....do you want one?

When in spring is the best time? I presume getting it all prepared and then banging the adverts in at the start of the inevitable April heatwave is what most people would do?

It doesn't cost anything to advertise it on PH.

If you want rid of it then advertise it now.

Difficult to say. I've been watching MG TF prices and they do not appear to have changed at all since summer. Maybe it's still a bit early but I was hoping prices would have softened by now, when in fact they haven't.

There are also less TFs for sale now than there were even a month ago irked

In a very similar position with the better halfs V Plate 84k 1.6... wink
Had it up for sale a while but no real bites, just put 12 months MOT on it and the plan was to move it along and replace it with another 2 seater convertable.... driving
The revised plan is to get another winter out the 5 and move it on when the sun comes back out.
.......but if an unturndownable offer was to come along...... wink

True but if there is a possibilty of getting more for it in a few months I may as well hang on. I am Scottish!

That would make it a Mk2 i assume?

How rusty is it?

If its in good nick it will sell at the usual price regardless of time of year, but only to someone who knows their stuff.

I;d advertise it for what you want for it on specific MX5 sites now (MX5Nutz, or the Owners club, even here)

Then if it doesnt sell, try wider in the summer.

The advantage being that this advertisng now is free on those sites.

Nowt to loose.

This assumes its not a rust bucket wink

It doesn’t make much difference what time of year you sell it from a price PoV.
In spring you might have a few more people looking and perhaps be in a better position to bargain.

But, it's not like the price will actually go up between now and then, it's 6 months more depreciation on the car.

Just try and flog it now – put it on ebay as a classified add. See if it sells.

As with all petrolheads I like to think my P&J is well looked after and worth what I ask for...but reality is a harsh mistress!

I might pop an advert up on here then.

What were you looking to get for it? I have no idea...I know how much I bought it for but obviously dont want to post here...just incase. Mine has a FSH and 78000, not 87K

Im wary of putting people off by using salesy words to try and show how tidy it is

and percentage wise how much difference can there be between summer and winter prices on a £2k car? No more than a few hundred at most, like has been said, there's just probably a few more buyers when the sun comes out. cool

It's current up at £1995 and an offer in that ballpark would drive it away. wink

Even if it were to sell for £200 more in the spring you'd lose most of that in having to pay to tax and insure it till then. Unless you SORN'ed it of course and then you'd have the added hassle of someone wanting to test drive a car that wasn't road legal.

I'd sell it now and put the money in a savings account and have fun watching it lose value becuase of inflation at 5% a year.

I could put the money in a jar and pay people to look at it...I'd be more likely to see gains than putting it in a 1.5% ISA! wink
