I need an exec saloon car for work it has to be a diesel as i cover 25k a year in miles, all i see on the roads are BMW 320d and 520d and A4's i really like the look of the 159 but everytime i mention it to anyone i get the scrunched face and intake of breath.
Basically
1 are they reliable?
2 are they fun to drive?
3 Is it worth getting an diesel, auto alfa?
4 should i go for one or pay a bit more and get a golf, audi,(can't afford A5) bmw?

159 is no longer manufactured so getting a new one 'might' be a struggle. I have risked Alfa ownership (at a different end of the scale to you) and have not regretted it in 2.5 years of ownership - despite a rather expensive MOT this week.

I love the looks and can forgive the odd hiccup.....

Generally I think the 'newer' Alfas are on a par with mainstream brands. The dealer experience may not be great so finding a good specialist maybe preferential.....

An Alfa??
Are you mental?
Italian electricity doesn't work and it'll rust like crazy.
Ugly too, you want a 320d. A silver one.

Clearly it was sarcasm.

1. SWMBO's Dad's have been. (He's had a 156 and 159 for the last 8 years.)
2. Ish... as fun as any derv is.
3. Depends how much you want one. Be warned that it's not going to save you anything like as much money as a 320d will in terms of fuel economy.
4. Only you can answer that. If you really want one, go for it. If you're not sure, I suggest you consider something BMW shaped.

Despite my bout of sarcasm earlier, I think this is one stereotype that has a firm grounding in truth. Don't get an auto.

Fine car, a cousin of mine got a diesel engined one some 2 years ago. No issues at all so far, just regular servicing and that's it. And so pretty! Only downside IMVHO is that the beasts are quite heavy, his is about 1.6 tons IIRC. So you'd probably want one of the bigger engines in there...

Sorry, should add some more detail about what he's got.

It's a black, auto 1.9 JDTM with tan leather.

It's an auto as he has a gammy knee so a manual just isn't an option anymore.

He's very keen on it and hasn't had any real issues to speak of other than a stone got lodged in one of his brake calipers the first week he had it!

I've got one, it looks great and drives quite well, I just dont trust it to go any great distance without flashing up a warning, and i've used 2 alfa main dealers and they are terrible.

One thing I learnt from an alfa tech sums the brand up for me. One of the many loan cars I have had was an alfa GT (another nice car). But I looked at the bonnet and noticed it was much higher than the wing on the edge. When the guy came to pick it up I asked him why this was (asking if it had been hit or something)

He just laughed and said that when alfa changed the car to rhd they forgot to set the wipers up for rhd, and instead of going back to the drawing board they just raised the bonnet an inch so the wipers don't scrape on the underside of it.

If they could build cars (and deal with customers) they would be a great brand. I would go with the bmw.

I bought a 2008 1.9Jtdm with 80K on it about 3 months ago.

its now on 87K, not had a single warning light, the only problem i had was one of the window regulators failed, and that only cost me 60 quid to replace.

Great cars, lovely interior, handles great for a big barge, comftable - great ride quality.

oh and its got to be one of the best looking saloons.
