Back in the day I had about £2k's worth of I.c.e in my £1k fiesta! An alpine HU, JL Audio W7 sub, JL 500/1 amp and uprated speakers. The quality of the bass was amazing. I'm now wanting to upgrade the system in my e46 but not sure how to proceed:

I would like the same quality of bass but think the set-up above is probably over kill now considering that I'm no longer into setting off other ppl's car alarms with my bass! What else will drop as low but is cheaper but still as crisp (10" sub wanted)?

Would like to power the front speakers of the same amp if possible to get enough power from one unit.

Would like the oem HU to remain. Not sure if how well this can be done and whether anyone has tried the JL Audio Cleansweep for this?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Cheers

it all depends on budget.

if you want to keep the oem headunit but add a sub to it the you will need a sound processr like a alpine imprint or jl cleansweep. This is due to the factory eq setup on the standard headunit. You may be best replacing it with an aftermarket one.

For your front speakers rainbow do a custom fit set designed for an e46 bmw, they arn't the cheapest but do give a great improvement over standard.

How much boot space do you want to sacrifice for your sub? you can get suboxes that have a port through the ski flap to get the sound in to the car. The biggest problem on the e46 is that the boot is very well sound proofed so you will need the ski flap open to get the sound in to the car. if your car does not have it then the metal blanking panel has to be cut out.

hope this helps

Rainbow are fantastic units. I have them in my STi, and they do well given the Impreza is st for audio with its tin foil doors. I did the audio thing in a few cars, but nowadays I would probably just get an all in one sub unit just to bolster the sound a bit.
