Right Off, Is it on the V5
Discussion
Im looking at a car advertised in the PH classifieds at the moment. Went to view it yesterday and made an offer. The owner did say that it was involved in a prang and he replaced the 'tub', its a 'Seven' type kit car. When I told him that I would send a deposit that would have to be refundable if the paper work wasnt in order he replied with the fact that he 'had no idea how the accident was recorded, I took the money and bought
the car back'!
Does a right off show up on his V5, is he pulling a fast one. The guy is a well known driver in the cars race series and a car restorer. Should he have mentioned the crash in his ad?

If its a 7 then if he has replaced the tub then i would take that as the entire chassis so zero worries
He only replaced the tub (GRP bit), the chassis was checked on a jig but still, I'm really not sure about buying a car that was written off even though it was bought back from the insurance company and repaired very well. I havn't done at HPI check but it must be registered as either a cat C or D and I'm sure that will effect resale if ever I do want to sell it.Lordbenny said:

If he 'took the money and bought the car back' that strongly implies it was a write off, as otherwise the insurance company wouldnt be taking the car.the car back'!

Cat C is normally declared on the V5 - usually via a reference to VIC test. I've never seen Cat D declared on the v5 though.

Not necessarily. I crashed my car, insurers declared it Cat C, I bought the wreck back, had it fixed and submitted it for a VIC. Since the insurers returned the original V5C to me (because it always remained my car), there is no record on it of the Cat C. I suspect if the car ever acquires a new V5C it will show the substantial damage and VIC marker.tog said:

You can get Cat-Ds removed from the register anyways...LB, go in with your eyes open, at tleast he's being honest with you.

He's not being honest on the PH classified ad, I drove to Oxford from SW London without knowing that it had had a shunt and had been written off. Not that honest! It is a great car and I would be buying it now if I hadn't known about its history. I just dont fancy owning a cat c/d write off.Dift said:
If he's not been that honest about it, I'd be tempted to walk.
Supprised it wasn't in his advert, which is where most would put it.
Depending on how much your spending, might be worth getting a specialist to have a gaze at it (if your paying caterham money).
It is a superb car mechanically, 185bhp loads of lightweight goodies, just let down by the bodywork really (It is a competition car first and road car 2nd) Got him down to £8100 in the end which is about the going rate but quite a lot for a car that's been written off!......I've walked!
