Quick one - My partner has just had our second baby and had the joy of an emergency Caesarian. Her car tax is due and given the birth, she'll not be driving for the next month.

Can I SORN the car for just a month and retax it when she's able to drive? I think I can, as the DVLA website suggests that SORN is for a year or until it's just retaxed.

Clarification appreciated smile

Cheers

Yes, you can. As soon as it's taxed or sold, the SORN expires.

My wife had a c section last year and was driving again about 10 days later, someone had to pick me up from the pub.

Check with your insurance company, there is no hard and fast rules she can drive when she feels up to it.

Re taxing a SORN'd car is a pain, you need to fill in a form and go to the post office, and then some of them don't know how to do it. Personally, I'd take the hit on the 1 month of tax then go through the hassle.

No it's not, you tax it online as normal, SORN is cancelled and the tax disc comes in the post.

She'll be fine - retax it yes
It could be depressing knowing that you've untaxed her car

+1 I have just put mine on a Sorn, till next year summer time. I got a small refund, on two months tax £17.50 .

So is it worth it to put it on a Sorn ?.

That is something to consider, as it could be perceived as a barrier to getting out and about.

I only SORN mine when it's going to be off the road for a few months due to winter or work on it. The minimum duration you can SORN for is 14 days also IIRC.

I've never been able to (admittedly it has been a while since I tried). I have always been told that to tax a vehicle without the reminder I need to take the V5c and V10 forms into a post office however they do say:

"I have made SORN but I now intend to use the vehicle, what can I do? You should tax the vehicle before you use or keep the vehicle on the public road. You can use our online or phone service if you have the Registration Certificate or the renewal reminder. You will also need valid insurance and either MOT Certificate/GVT Certificate."

Whenever I have tried it just says 'License not due to expire' (or something) and won't let me try to tax it.

Except that the disc starts in the month you are applying.

So you cannot have the disk start for the beginning of the following month as you would if the vehicle was currently taxed. It makes a small but annoying difference.

Fair enough, we'll just put it down to the wonders of the DVLA hehe
