Thinking of exporting my car to the UK - Is it worth it?
Discussion
I live in the Middle East and drive an 2010 (09 Model) Hummer H3 Alpha. It has a 5.3 V8 engine and full option. I paid GBP 25k brand new on the road for it. I've been quoted GBP5000 to ship it to the UK and for all the relevant paperwork, modifications and taxes/fees to be taken care of. I would have to hold onto it for a further 12 months to avoid VAT. The question is, would I be mad in bringing it to the UK? It's a fun 4X4, very capable off road and has great street presence. But it's thirsty, I have no idea of its mpg, out here it costs me GBP11 a tank of petrol so I don't really take notice. Also would there be a market for it when I come to sell it?
I certainly wouldn't consider exporting it to the UK to sell it. The market for it here would be tiny - those not put off by <20mpg will be put off by it's... offensively American styling (yes I know that sounds silly, but it's still true). By all means bring it to the UK if you want it, but if you don't intend to keep it for a significant period of time, you'll probably be better off selling it wherever you are now.

A Hummer in the UK sticks out like a sore thumb. You would have very little hope of selling it over here. Its too big for UK roads, and with petrol prices in their current state it would be too costly for anyone to run.
Erm no, that's all pretty much wrong.Edited by kambites on Monday 31st October 11:00

Erm no, that's all pretty much wrong.I haven't driven one but I have been in one and the ride quality was abysmal, even on relatively smooth American highways.
Yes it stands out, but for some that'd be the whole point. There are some in the PH classifieds, Autotrader and on ebay.
The market is niche for them, but that means that when someone wants one, that's what they'll buy.
MPG - no worse than a p38 V8 Range Rover or Disco. Quite the opposite I suspect.
Don't know about the ride, but they are IFS and coil live rear. Can't believe they ride any worse than any comparable SUV be it Landy, Jeep, Toyota, Nissan or whoever.
Prices would be the key thing to check along with the OPs intentions for it. If they want to keep it, then it might well be cheaper to ship it, rather than buy another here.
However depending on costs of getting it road legal and in the UK it might not make such a viable plan if their intent is to sell and try and make money on it.
Being a niche vehicle means you can't really put a timescale on how easy or quick it'll sell.
If someone wants one, then you could sell it the same day as you advertise it, or it could take 6 months.

Sorry, my bad, I xlearly mix3ed it up with the bigger brother lol. I must admit I'm pretty crap with Hummers
H2 is MASSIVE. H3 is a lot smaller and can be had for sensible money.

Similar size to a Disco 3, similar money and similar mpg to a V8 powered Disco 3, although slightly slower.
Mine is 300bhp V8 and it's sooo fast ! Actually it can hold its own against a Landcruiser from the lights. I used to have the 5 cylinder 3.5 H3, now that was slow.
Where it comes into its own is on the dunes, the torque and front clearance is enviable. It never gets stuck. Used it a few times to tow out my mates Wrangler. But I also put that down to his inexperience on the sand.
