What's the best sporty diesel to go for?

If you're looking for a hatchback-type car, then the BMW 123d should just about be accessible. Otherwise the Skoda Fabia/Octavia vRS is well worth a look, and I'd even go as far as to suggest that a Mondeo ST TDCi would be poky enough.
With a lot of diesels, the sportiness feel comes from the power delivery (nice big lump before you change gear); and as such is perceived speed rather than actual. I used to love booting my old works Zafira through the gears, I was only going 60 by the time I'd finished in third but it was a very enjoyable way of getting there!

As a daily drive mine had to go, I was going to get into serious trouble.
Every time I got in it I wanted to drive it like a Touring Car, it was ace.
I hoped the looks would grow on me too, but they never did, still looks like a pig.
but as an oily drive, ace...
The Type R might lap Bedford marginally quicker, but I can't imagine you would find a 123d wanting on the road.

I think my post wasn't very well written - the 123d is quite bonkers (it's a twin turbo!), what I was meaning to convey was that other cars such as a Golf GT or even a 120d aren't as quick as they feel, but are a good laugh nonetheless.As a daily drive mine had to go, I was going to get into serious trouble.

Big old beast, but stunningly quick and a mighty find piece of engineering! That or (as previously mentioned) something like a 330d or 123d. The 123d is stunning and is as quick as a Golf GTI on paper. In reality its more flexible in the real-world so you can cover distances very quickly and easily. BUT its not the most attractive car and somewhat expensive for what it is.
The 330d is also equally stunning. Heavier, not quite as sporting and usually full of kit / extras. Its the urge of these things that gets me. When you put your foot right down, the torque hit is amazing and you are off. I understand that they can eat rear tyres if you arent careful.
I wouldnt bother with the Audi's though. Yes they are quick, but older ones (for the price bracket) will be the older engine (heavy) and with the crap suspension setup. Yes, fast in a straight line, but corners will be dull wallowy affairs and not entertaining.
Not quite sporty, but does the Merc C320CDI fit into this? A bit "old man" image, but in the later Sport spec they are quite nice and the 320CDI engine is a corker (even more torque that the BMW I believe!). Never going to set your trousers alight, but might be interesting.
Finally, the later Golf GTTDI was supposed to be good. In 170BHP spec and the sport suspension it was supposed to be a nice drive. NOT as good as a proper petrol GTI, but I know a few people with them who say they are growers.....
