Is it possible to get a E60 535d in any other spec than M-Sport? I want the engine but not the firmer ride.

Also, is the A6 3.0TDi Quattro firmer than said 535d?

The later post 2007 M-Sport is softer than the earlier versions, and the Audi S-Line is board hard.

The F10 offers M-Sport suspension deletion but can't recall if this applied to E60 or not. So you could have the 'looks' of an ///M but not as much back ache.

Looking at BMW AUC though I can't find any 535d with this sorry frown

Not sure if it applies with the 535d but a lot of Beemers with the top spec engines come with M Sport suspension regardless of whether they're actually an M Sport or not, for example the 335i comes as SE or M Sport but has the same suspension for both.

You should have a go in them before you make your mind up.

We have an A4 S Line that supposedly rides very badly. In reality, the ride is a bit form but the seats more than make up for it so it is a very comfortable car.

As for the M Sport BMWs, make sure you try one without run flat tyres. And yes, the E60 535d came in SE spec and the M Sport suspension deletion was also an option.

I have tried the 535d M Sport, A6 (2.0TDi as 3.0 wasnt available to test) but havent yet tried the Merc...irrationally dont fancy it.

The BMW was pretty stiff I thought and the Audi about the same although I'm not sure if there will be a difference due to the heavier engine?

Any experience of the Merc out there?

Try a Jag S-type or XF instead? Or a Lexus GS maybe?

I had a 535d mport after all the hype it was one of the cars I owned for the shortest time, buckled three front wheels in 6 weeks and had such a horrid ride it was gone in 7 weeks.

Now have a 730d sport and the ride is much better for uk roads imho

Yes, 3 years of the lesser engine E220 cdi, the E320 cdi engine is very highly regarded, goes like a train, reliable, and sounds quite nice for a diesel IMO.

My E Class had the avantgarde spec which comes with slightly stiffer suspension, I fitted larger 18" alloy wheels with lower profile tyres, and it still offered a wonderful ride and soaked up potholes and uneven roads very well, better than my new C Class with the same size wheels on - The E Class is not the last thing in cornering ability but you can't have everything!

S-Type is a bit cramped in the back and the XF is annoyingly out of reach. GS i havent considered. Do they do Diesels now?

Not quite right, sports suspension and M Sport suspension always were different (although it wouldn't drastically surprise me if they've done away with the interim set, despite it usually being the best one to have).

Used to be that the standard/SE saloon and estate got standard suspension (with sport suspension optional), the coupe and convertibles in standard/SE spec got sports suspension and the Sport/M Sports have their own settings again (but could be deleted back to the default suspension for the relevant body style.

With regard to the OP, as was stated very early on, yes the E60 535d was available in SE specification with standard suspension, although they're a relatively rare sight compared with the near ubiquity of M Sports.

Although much has been said of simply ditching the run flats for a marked improvement in ride quality.

For instance.

No, Loco is right - 335's have M-SPort suspension on the SE.

Note the use of the past tense and bit in brackets. wink

Another reason I'll still be choosing an E90 330i SE in due course, rather than a 335i

Used, unless my company fancy splashing out on one instead of the inevitable Avensis!

Zwoelf - its always good to see them in the flesh...in my AT searches (Within 60 miles) there are only M Sports and more than one confirmation is needed to satisfy this cynical git! :S
