As someone who has taken a little bit of interest in private plates over the years but never yet pulled the trigger , I was wondering what the actual state of the pp market is ?

There are a few plates that I've had my eye on for over a year still remain unsold , I get texts and emails from reg transfers offering me the same plates time after time.

Has the Market collapsed or is now the time to get in with a realistic offer from my point of view ?

Has anyone got any recent purchases that they can give me a clue to the actual price paid to what it was originally advertised at ?

Many thanks in advance.

And yes before you ask I'm a tightarse.

Regtransfers latest accounts filed at companies house state they are looking to offload as much stock as possible given economic conditions.

But they don't own many plates, and certainly don't own many of the expensive plates (unless they bought for £xxx from DVLA and are trying to peddle them at £XX,XXX.

The private plate market (especially 'proper' private plates, pre-suffix/preffix) exploded when the new style plates came out in 2001 - you could no longer get a short 'new' plate from DVLA. I bought mine in 2000, within 2 years I was being offered 4x the price, by 2006 that became 8x the price.

The market has softened a little since 2008, but not massively. People with valuable plates aren't those that particularly need liquidate assets...yet at least.

There's a guy local that owns a huge plate company, made a fortune part time, even turning up to a £40k factory job in a Ferrari before taking it up full time. Now reportedly a millionaire.

The plate market, going by auction prices last month is still indeed very strong, the little plate I fancied "ALF44C" smashed its reserve of £400 and sold for more than £3k from memory. Most of the others also had strong figures.

2008 of course saw the beginning of the economic slump and Cherished Plates are of course an item that is not needed, so no surprise that sales are down.

Having said that the sums that National Numbers, Regtransfers etc charge are to my mind ludicrous, they would sell more if their prices were more realistic.

The auctions at DVLA would be more of a guide however from what I've seen lately, just spotting from afar, interest is waning.
