Realising your dream car
Discussion
So, after losing my right leg in a bike accident in '99 i was destined to drive only auto's for the rest of my days. And as i was 19 at the time it wasn't the most exciting prospect but at least i was still driving.
A few years later i discovered bike engined cars, which i converted to hand clutch and had a Westfield Megablade then afterwards a road legal Rage Buggy with a ZZR1400 engine.
Three engines later and bored of bike engined cars i was looking for my next toy when i found the Duck clutch conversion from ELAP mobility. It consists of a lever on the gearknob which when pressed activates a motor which in turn pulls the clutch pedal therefore working the clutch.
My dilema now was if it was possible for me to drive a manual car again. What would i buy? It had to be able to handle at least a few trackdays, be quick (obviously) and be reliable.
My first thought was an E39 M5, i'd always like the look of them but as i'd just sold a D2 S8 i dismissed it thinking they would be too similar.
Anyway two days after speaking to ELAP about their Duck Clutch and realising it was a quality system i found myself down in Somerset at the Ariel factory sitting in an Atom 300 and discussing them fitting the Duck Clutch.
In the 8 months i've owned it i've done about 12 trackdays and it is an awesome bit of kit, both the clutch and the Atom and neither has missed a beat. Happy days.
So, i realise my choice went from a £10k BMW to a £40k Atom. But i got the car i always wanted but never thought possible. What would you have chosen?
