Doing my usual scanning of ebay when bored and continually astounded at the performance bargains around the £5000 mark. Got to say it's the biggest bargains seems to be Impreza STI's. A few ropey skylines knocking about but they do seem to have fallen into the wrong hands over the couple of years and too many are sporting wk paintjobs and stupid bodykits. I daren't even mention Supra's.
Amazingly quite a few nice Evo's too.

All the cars you've listed at that price would really worry me. Take imprezas, there's so many of them around of every variety that to find an honest one would take a lifetime. Too many chavved up thrashed examples with shady history and the one that has credible history will be at a premium but worth it rather then be stung with an engine rebuild.
A friend of mine bought a 'good' P1 with reciepts to prove everything yet it still shot its guts all over the road within a week.
Bargain hunting is great and I spend a great deal of time searching for my next car but there's certain criteria to meet - big crazy jap turbo thing is a big no no for me.

I know i sound like a cracked record, but m3 evo at this price will be far less troublesome.

Balls. smile

If you actually look at the Impreza STis for sale there are plenty of freshly imported untouched imports for sale regularly.

Go look in the classifieds now, there are 5 or 6 rather tasty unchavved STi Type Rs for sale. For £5k I dont think you can get a better all rounder.

Some superb examples for much less than £5k. 80k estoril on an R plate went for £3200 last week.
Not worth an argument though!

No argument there. I still maintain that currently these are one of the biggest performance steals there are.

Totally Agree. A quick look at the pictures and the way the description is written will tell you most of what you need to know. 10 minutes and I could find a few good examples around the £5k mark.

I didn't mean an argument with you mate, it was the argument with the wife.

An X308 XJR will keep up with an M3 (in a straight line, at least) and is about the same cost, otherwise you are right. M3 evo would be my choice.

I just bought a 1998 TVR Chimaera 4lt for 3,5k.
Chassis is fine, interior is in great shape.
Drove it straight to Germany and was a good drive.
Needs a new clutch and excessive play in drive train but I would expect to pay more like 8k for a Chimaera in this good a condition.

Agreed. I just bought a genuine 48,000 mile Sti Type R v6 for under £5,000. Only modification was the obligatory backbox.

Spending £3000 will get you an amazing MR2 Turbo. Mine cost me £2300 and wanted for very, very little. New tyres and a fresh coat of waxoyl was it all I wanted to get sorted on it. Absolutely bombastic performance from them too, mine is a Rev3 that is quoted at 0-60mph in 5.1 seconds, and the 'on the move' pickup is fantastic too. A real hidden gem of performance motoring, they are to be engined for their awesome power, beautiful design and great Japanese engineering and build.

I have thought to myself that for such little cash, nothing else as quick really exists and is so useable day to day. In the future I may go for a 4WD rally rep, but even those cars may not be as engaging to drive as the MR2. I'd best hang onto it!

Easily get a solid early Chim for that and you won't get more smiles per mile anywhere else.

Granted they aren't "silly fast" by todays standards but i've never found mine slow! And the noise.....oh my....

I take that! I've just done some research and my 2-3 year old experience is clearly out of date - I've actually seen a really nice 55 plate impreza whilst searching for £4500!!!

There's never been so many fast, cheap cars about.

For a few reasons...

There are more fast cars made its easy to increase the performance of most turbo cars loads of cheap grey imports combined with increasing insurance and petrol costs = BARGAINS !

I keep looking at buying a Ferrari or Maserati but when I look at what £3-5k buys they really make no sense.

M3, M5, Evo, Impreza, S6 2.7TT, R32 GTR, R33 GTS, Soarer 2.5T / V8, Pulsar GTiR, 200SX, 300ZX, GT4, RX7 FD, 944 Turbo....
