After seeing all the coverage of that awful crash on the M5, and people trying to get others out of burning cars - I've bought 3 'life hammers' to keep in my cars....

I have to say that coverage has really made me think....

good to have them to hand... but I would be more worried about the possibility of ending up underwater than a pile up.

I don't have life hammers, but I keep a heavy steering wheel lock in the passenger footwell in each of my cars.
Should do the same job I'd imagine.

Good idea, hope you never have reason to use them.

It's the pictures of 5-6 drivers desperately trying to open a car with someone trapped in it - genuinely chilling. I sincerely hope they'll never have to be used, but better to be prepared

The point of the hammer is its point!
You can whack a window with a baseball bat with little or no effect - tap it with a pointed life saving hammer .... job done!

The gave those away with a Fast Car magazine ten or so years ago. Bloody useles. The points of the hammer would flatten when you hit glass and you were better off picking a stone up from the side of the road and pelting the window.

you would be better off getting some advanced driver training if you haven't already got any.

Are you suggesting advanced drivers don't get caught up in accidents? Sometimes you are just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Where are you going to keep this hammer? You may have over turned and be stuck in you seat with the little hammer just out of reach.

Mine is attached to the floor just in front of the seat, in a yellow and black handle kind of way.

Agreed there is no point if you can't reach it when the st hits the fan.

You won't need a hammer because during the accident, the lock will have flown around and probably battered you and your passenger's skulls in.

I have 2 questions

1 - why do people keep steering lock devices in their cars anyway? I can remove on in less than 1 min using an aerosol and a hammer

2 - if you must keep the world's crappest security device in your car, DON'T keep it in the passenger compartment where - during an accident - it will become a blunt weapon eh?

Some have Velcro attachments so you can put it wherever it's within reach and have a safe/hidden blade to cut seat belts.
