Seriously get a 125 bike. Nippy, cheap to insure, £15 a year to tax, 60+mpg and with a bit of fibreglass on you head and leather between you and a road instead of a metal box with airbags you will have no illusion of safety and will be a better driver later on. There's no point getting a car until you're twenty one these days, unless you can afford £5,000-£10,000 a year to insure a £250 Micra that is.
Chicks dig leathers.
You scrub mates won't be bummung lifts off you everywhere.
The Police won't stop you every time you go anywhere.
You won't get stuck in traffic.
More fun at the speed limit than a car ever could be.
Anyone who wantsa first car should get a bike.

Eh up Chris how's the Merc' going?
My first car was a 1963 Triumph Vitesse 1600 Estate. I bought her when i was fifteen and did a ground up restoration ready for my to drive when I was seventeen. Sadly the car turned out to have been stolen in the 80's and was stached rather than stored in the barn. I bought it from the farms new owners who didn't have a clue. Anyway I bought the car from the insurance company and had to transfer the car to an age related number plate instead of the original one.
I bought a 965cc Panda 4x4 after that and so began the obsession.
£5,000 is a lot to start with. Put £1,000 aside for the car, £1,000 for the lesson, test, pass plus and I.A.M membership, the other £3,000 will be useful as a deposite for your insurance.
Happy motoring.

I'm not sure a 17 year old thinks about airbags and stuff while driving? I didn't (OK, it was 1988) and I don't think driving an old car without seat belts wouldn't really have changed my attitude. A safe car is a better bet for an "invincible" young driver.
Try go-compare buddy they were the best for me when I passed just over 6 months ago. Also if you can, put your mother and father on it, this will help bring the cost down. As far as a car goes Mk5 Fiesta 1.25 Zetecs are good on fuel, not too bad to insure and are nippier than most other 1.2's

£2700 to insure a 1.2 1999reg corsa!!! f
king joke does any one else know any other good websites for cheap insurance :[
Don't bother with corsas, saxos, fiestas. Try something a little larger and not likely to be smashed up by youngsters. As others have mentioned kit cars, classics ( morris minor, old volvos etc.) may be cheaper. Not the 'trendiest' but could be cheaper.

Putting others as named drivers on the policy with you as main driver. Try putting on driveway, fully comp instead of TPFT. Many wierd things can influence the price - just keep playing with the meerkat.
