£7k fun car that can be driven on an automatic licence
Discussion
Hi Guys,
A friend has asked me for advice and i'm a bit stumped.
he's looking at spending 6-8k on a new fun car- originally a two seater for just him and other half. BUT other half only has an automatic licence. Oh and for physical reasons his other half can't drive a manual.
SO what would be fun that can be driven on an automatic licence for this money. MPG iwsn't massively important as he isn't doing many miles, and neither are maintenance costs.
He's currently thinking of an A8 ?!? (I used to have one), but there must be something more fun available.
thoughts?

M3? Dunno if you'd get an E46 SMG in budget, no idea what they go for these days.
Possibility, although £8k for an SMG M3 is a money-pit waiting to happen.A 330Ci would be a much safer option IMO and you can get a much lower-mileage car for this money.

Smart roadster is horrific tbh, especially when compared to a Z4, boxster or an SLK.
I am interested on how long you owned a smart Roadster for?I owned one for a few years and horrific is the last word I would have used to describe one. Only car I've ever owned that I would happily own another example of.
Having driven an SLK of similar money I would be tempted to reverse your comment in the other direction, although havent owned an SLK so cannot comment on long term ownership. The SLK felt positively ordinary and dull compared to the Roadster despite it's clever roof. The SLK performance felt heavy and slugish by comparison and also didn't steer as well, it certainly could not match the Roadsters brakes (which were superb). Yes the Roadster gearbox is slow compared to most paddle shifters but this is a)very easy to learn (part of the fun?) and b) very easily sorted by a specialist (of which there are loads around).
And although it isn't listed as a concern for the OP the fact that even a tuned hard driven Roadster can easily return 50mpg must feature somewhere at todays prices. In my opinion if the Roadster had been sold with a three pointed star on the bonnet officially it would probably still be on sale today and selling like hot cakes, but that's the badge effect for you.
If I was in a similar position to the OP's friend an SLK would probably not even feature on a list of 'fun' cars (and i do like Merc's) unless it was a AMG55.... slightly out of budget that one though.
Boxster a good nod though if insurance/MPG and running costs are not a concern (see, not in complete disagreement with you
