What are the most important criteria for you when deciding on your next daily driver? For most people there are lots of things to consider including space, reliability, value for money, noise (either loud or quiet!), comfort, equipment, performance, MPG, handling, looks, insurance costs, depreciation and CO2.

I do a reasonable amount of business mileage each year so I need to take this into consideration. For me the key criteria are reliability, MPG, value for money, adequate performance and good handling. I don’t particularly need a lot of space so would welcome a small 2+2 coupe such as the new FT-86 / BRZ. I just hope that the MPG is reasonable.

I have two cars, both have different requirements.
My basic list is.
Number of seats.
Big enough boot.
Economy – tax, mpg etc.
Almost all cars come with the same range options these days.

The overriding consideration though, is "Do I like to drive it?"
If that answer is No then it's off the list, regardless of anything else.

How miserable.
Have the bike for fun and the boat for tinkering.

I'm in the lucky position of not currently having any real practicality concerns so for me it's:

Steering feel.
Other control feel.
Handling balance.
Driving position.
Overall running costs.
Performance.
Reliability.
Practicality.

How much the Meerkats want for me to drive it?

Is it cool/fun?

Do I like it?

That's about it really.

You put "is it cool" above "do I like it"? How tragic. hehe

Basically; "economy, practicality, how man cup holder" sad acts. What is important to me? Is the car cool or fun and do I like it?

How I ended up with a Rover 213S, they are cool, fun and I like it.

Ahh, Don't be mean.
I'm sure the chap meant that he will buy it if he considers it cool by his own personal definition of cool, not someone else's.

Cool is what one drives oneself, what is uncool is what other people drive.

Or he really like air conditioning.

I thought that everyone knew that everyone was joking.
I was just adding to the joke. smile

I think for me it's not really a list of what I want in a car.
It's more a process of elimination.

I'll look at and drive all the cars that meet my broad criteria, and then start crossing them off.

It's the same when it get's to specific cars rather than the model in general.
For example
Colour.
I won't buy a car because I like the colour – but I will refuse one because I hate the colour.

Does it excite me? Will I be proud to own it? Is it good to drive? Is it vaguely reliable? Is it comfortable? Does it have a boot big enough for dirty weekends?

Next car is likely to be an S type R Jag. Insurance, fuel economy are completely irrelevant to the mileage I do and my age and location.

Yes same here really - I drove twenty or thirty different models of car before making up my mind last time, but I think my final decision was made broadly on the grounds of the priorities that I listed above.

Obviously once the model has been decided, other criteria pop up for picking a particular example of that model - age, price, mileage, equipment, condition, etc.

2 most important things:-

- Reliability
- Does it have a drinks holder and somewhere to prop my ipod up

my vw polo does this perfectly, little tray the ipod stands in under the head unit, next to the drinks holder.

absolute necessity for long drives

'Do I want one?'

- It's why I have an Alfa GTV with no boot and costs me an arm and leg in fuel and maintenance.

I'm a bit of a numptie all said and done
