Idiotic overtaking is the problem, but let's focus on speed
Discussion

The road in question, near to where I live, finally fully opened about a month ago (half of it opened last year and there have been numerous crashes and fatalities). I've taken a few journies down the road and it is indeed crazy. It's as if everyone who hasn't overtaken for years now attempts to on this road.
I like to progress with my journey and will overtake when it is clear and safe to do so. However, I don't really see so many overtakes in general on the roads nowadays. Sometimes (and this has been discussed on other threads) it makes people angry and can be frowned upon. Even though it's in the highway code.
Anyway, the people who use this road are crazy. They overtake on blind corners, overtake at speeds about 2mph faster than the vehicle they are passing, and even overtake with no lights on at night! Scary, that one.
So, due to the idiocy on this road we have had some incidents (some of which, unfortunately, have been fatal). These have have even made the lady in the article take another route to work. The problem does seem to be terrible driving. However, were is the focus of the Road Safety Pratnership going? Speed. 'Ridiculously high speed'. That's it.
Nevermind the fact that people are performing terrible overtakes, not concentrating on where they are going or even looking before they pull out. The problem is 'ridiculously high speed'. What would it take for the Road Safety Pratnership to actually try and educate people. You know, pull them up for tailgating. Have a word with them about how they passed a lorry on a blind corner with traffic coming the other way? Actually speak to people about their driving standards, rather than just hit them with the speed kills mantra.
Hell, they could speak to people about their speed. A chat about different speed in different conditions, telling people that the speed limit isn't a target in rain and fog. We all know speed can make a difference in situations like a head-on crash, but you would then ask why the vehicles had a head-on in the first place.
Annoys the hell out of me this. It's all about speed kills. Speed. Speed. Speed. Nevermind the fact that someone is facing you on the wrong side of the road!! I despair.

Maybe, just maybe, this is a perfect example of the real agenda that some Road Safety Pratnerships follow. Nothing to do with proper education, it's all about catching people speeding and the money that makes.
Edited to add - I'm thinking of writing them a letter based on this (first time I've been riled enough to do so). I'll also send a copy to the local paper that did this report.

Agreed, and these are sentiments echoed across many threads.
Unfortunately we now as a society, in all areas of life succumb to having to fall in line with the lowest common denominator. We can't teach that lowest common denominator how to drive to conditions or how to use common sense so we have to make a law that takes that choice away from them. The only quantifiable way to do this is cut speed limits.
Sad but true.

I had a heated debate with someone today about this. He is of the belief that speed kills. He dislikes my choice of car as it's a 2.0 litre and thinks we should all drive around in 1.2 econoboxes because they are 'safer'. When I informed him that I thought econoboxes were 'boring' he said that i'm part of the problem and are more likely to have a crash and kill someone.
Utter, utter tripe!
I told him about the way I drive. I like to progress but I won't progress if it's dangerous to do so. I said that because my car is a 2.0 litre I can progress quickly and easily (i.e. use the acceleration to overtake quickly). I said that doing the same thing in a bog standard 1.2 econobox is harder to do and takes more of a run up etc. He just rolled his eyes.
You just can't get through to some people. The mantra is sticking!

People are furious because someone in something fruity nips past in plenty of time in a safe manner, and they're stuck in the queue of the same piece of crap econoboxes, unable to get past if they had 3 miles of clear road.
The guy in the pic in the article is sitting in a BMW. I'm betting it's a 116i.

The comments section mentions a BMW driver that is harassing people on a regular basis. Could it be the chap in the pic? The guy in the pic in the article is sitting in a BMW. I'm betting it's a 116i.

Funny you should say that - does that look like a white reflection on the trim round the door mirror?
Age fits the profile - mid life crisis man, 53 with wife aged 29. Overcompensating much?

"Last Tuesday she narrowly avoided another accident when she pulled out to overtake a lorry and the car behind her attempted to overtake them both"
Sounds like she should have checked her mirrors before pulling out.
Or pulled back in a bit quicker after completing it.
If someone did "make a 3rd lane" unless he cuts her up afterwards - what's the problem ?

That by-pass is a godsend (In-laws live in Wainfleet All saints), though I do know exactly what you mean by the numpties. The road is used by a lot of lorries and as such sometimes you are stuck at 56mph until a suitable gap opens up to get past.
But here lies the problem - you either get the impatient idiots who try and overtake with the slightest gap, often causing oncoming cars to brake. Or, you get the people who don't know how or haven't the confidence to overtake which in turn leads back to the first type of person.
It won't be long until the road is set up with specs!

This road will have gone from a fun drive (when empty) to a road littered with speed enforcement. It'll be much safer then, of course.
It should have been dual carriageway anyway. That's another argument though.
No point putting up speed cameras, someone will just nick them

why is it that of late everyone that gets overtaken thinks is their right to attempt to blind the overtaker.
last night on a spirited drive i encountered a couple of cars doing 35ish in an NSL, i slowed up a touch checked the road ahead was clear, indicated and overtook all the while under the speed limit, but when im past them they stick the high beams on then flash me repeatedly! ffs why try and blind the guy thats legally overtaken. really boils my piss

Under powered (or low powered) cars can be very difficult to overtake with, and even more so in the hands of inexperienced drivers.High powered cars 'used correctly'are much safer if used correctly, get the wrong mix and accidents can happen of course. It's very difficult to put this point across to some people that think in black and white or have no experience of more powerful cars.
No matter what the cause may be (obvious in OP's case) people, who usually drive 09 plate micras, will always jump on the excessive speed bandwagon. This is usually because they spend 99% of their time going to the post office on 30mph limits AND HAVE NEVER CRASHED. So in their thinking, they see that accidents have happened on a road with a NSL and none on the road to the post office, so it MUST be the higher speeds that caused there to be an accident. Nothing else. boils my piss, and their word is usually taken as gospel and no doubt speed cameras, lower speed limit etc is imposed on the road. Despite the actual reason for the crashes being something competely f

I don't know the road but presume it's single carriageway? If so, then HGVs should only be doing 40.The A51 Tarporley bypass in Cheshire sounds the same - the road is probably a 2 mile curve around the village and if it's clear in front of you then 70-80 feels comfortable, but then someone will appear around the bend on the wrong side of the road at immense speed.
First post - been reading the forums for a long while but had to register to have an opinion on this
I live in Spalding, 5 minutes from the new road and use it daily. I think it's not the safest road in the world for a variety of reasons but seeing that story on the front page of our local newspaper made me mad. The road is no more or less safe than any of the others in the area, and is an infinite improvement on the one it replaces.
Since it opened (the first half of it) there have been, yes, a few quite bad accidents but again no more or less than any of the other roads in the area. A lot of people just seem to be jumping on the bandwagon and calling it the worst thing that has happened around here for ages. People like to have something to complain about and this is all that the problem seems to be.
Just my opinion anyway :-)
