Hi,

I have a garage which I rent. It's in a block with several others, has no power and as I'm renting it, I can't do any serious alterations. I'd like to make it more secure, and maybe fit some kind of alarm.

Any tips for me? What could I fit, any alarms that can be covertly fitted that can run off battery maybe. I have lots of big batteries spare and chargers at home. I will have my car and kayak in there and a few other bits.

I'm keen to hear any suggestions you may have. I will also consider a unit that will text my phone when activated for example.

Thanks,

Dan

Alarm - it'll go off and no-one will care.

Ask the owner if you can install a security post in front of the door that prevents it opening (when the post is locked in position).

Ok, but I know some alarms can text me it's gone off so I can get over there.

Its called an alarm mine.

You rig it up with a tripwire so if someone opens the garage door the pin flies in and sets off the blank cartridge.

Nasty men then get a big shock and run away.

Not perfect, but better than nothing...

Even when you're on holiday or in the pub or at work? I'd be more keen on preventing unwanted access in the first place than being notified when someone has gained access. Both would be even better but, for me, a notification alone is of limited value as I'm not always free to respond.

Yeah, good points. It's a council garage, not sure if they'd let me fit a bollard or not. I'll ask them.

The more visible security you have the more people will wonder what is in there.

RSI Videofied, will work with no main power and police response available via GPRS (with installer contract).

How about something like an ETS Mtrack with the motion sensor attached to the back of the garage door.

I have one on my Boxster as it's a sealed unit and doesnt invalidate the warranty..

Interesting. The website doesn't work very well on my phone but it appears to be a contract tracking system. So, you can add in a motion sensor too? I'd also be nervous about my kayak and windsurf being stolen too.

On a side note, at work I'm looking for a tracker to fit inside boat outboard engine cowlings. This looks like it might work there too.

I rent a garage off the council. Anything you add outside will only draw attention to the possibility of 'interesting' contents inside. I suggest you leave the outside plain and make some modifications inside wink
Good point.

Why not put steel door gates inside if there is room?.
