If you had the choice, would you choose an e39 Alpina 4.6 or an boggo E60 545?
Assume price is the same...

Whichever had been better looked after tbh. Not sure what the residuals are like on each car, but I still think I'd like the one in best condition.

Assume they're both on good condition then, for the sake of argument...

Alpina e39 for me please.

Better looking, greater rarity and will hold its value much better.

I considered an M5, but I want something quiet and comfy with a slushbox. (I NEVER thought those words would leave my mouth).
Plus, I have the 355 for going nuts. and. The potential for huge bills is less with the Alpina....

have you considered (heaven forbid!) a 535d? Ignoring the fuel costs, I'd have thought one would hold value much better than either of your v8s

I am back, and no, not sold the whale.
However. I am gainfully employed as of Monday. So have more or less decided to say 'fk the economy' and garage the GTR next to the 355 until a decent buyer turns up.
And buy a V8 barge in the mean time hehe

550i rather than 545i if you are in the market.

I had a E39 540i and changed to an E61 550i. The E60 is more refined, a little better and a few more modern comforts inside. BUT the interior isn't as good quality as the E39 and it doesn't feel as 'right' as the E39 did.

So 545i vs Alpina E39... I'd take the E39 if same mileage/condition and you don't need the slightly more room in an E60

Interesting. I'd have thought the E60 was the better car all round, so surprised to hear the e39 felt better inside... and pleased...

Hello cactussed, I won't bore you with the drive them line but the E60 really is a great car plus of course its not that long out of production. E39's are great but they are getting on in years now so this might be a maintainece factor. Some of the Alpina parts may be pricey and trim part can be expensive and difficult to locate.

I know you want a v8 so if it were I a 550 would be on the cards and think of the pub chat...... I have a 355 and 550 lol

Ps if your 355 has owl on its plate I owe u beer as u treated us to a flyby on the way to Le Mans a couple of years ago

LOL! OWL is indeed me. Sadly, I've hardly driven the car this year (I think its been to Goodwood Revival and that's it since June!)

I'm going to take a look at some 550's for comparison sake, but I do vry much like the e39 shape.
