insuring in UK but living in Africa
Discussion
hi there,
I left UK to work in Africa and have been here a year now. I plan to return a few years time, not sure when exactly, but my problem is that I don't want to lose my no claims bonus, which has amounted to 5 years I think now. So even though i'm in Africa (I don't drive here), I guess this means I'll need to insure a car over in the UK at some point before 2 years lapses, as I have been told that after 2 years the no claims bonus gets reset unfortunately.
Can someone suggest a way round this - is it as simple as insuring from a UK address and not declaring that I work abroad? I know it might sound like stretching the truth a bit, but to be honest I do visit the UK for a month or two every year and during that period I will need to drive. I don't own a car over there any more, but I was thinking to insure myself on my dad's car, and using my correspondance address over there? At the end of the day, I just want to keep my no claims alive as when I come back in the next few years, I'll be needing that for insurance purposes. If I insure myself on my dad's car, would that keep my no claims ticking over until I come back permanently and buy a car of my own?
Otherwise I don't really know what the answer is, if anyone has been in this dilemma before then I could really use some advice as to get round this 'zeroing' issue and find a loophole please.
Thanks in advance!

Ok, this will work but it probably is the wrong way to go about it.
Pick out a low insurance group car for sale on a forecourt and make a note of the reg no. Pick a friend or family member who lives in a low insurance area. And go online and insure the low group car at the low rate address in your name on an annual policy, sending them your bonus proof from your last policy 23 months ago.. A month later cancel the policy and ask for your bonus proof as of cancellation. You'll get a refund, of course less admin charges. But if you pick the right car and address it might not cost you much in the first place.
No one will ever know the difference because fraud only comes to light when you try and claim, and you have no intention of claiming.
The only possible problem, if you're incredibly unlucky, is that someone else buys the car and crashes it and has no insurance, because your info will come up on the MID. Then you just say that you were going to buy the car but changed your mind at the last minute and forgot to cancel the insurance you'd taken out on the car.
Noger, you seem to be an expert, and there's probably a million reasons why this is very wrong but ignore all those and say if it will work or not.

appreciate the ideas....but is it not just possible to insure myself on my dad's car from my correspondance address in the UK? is it not just possible to buy such policies online? it's not totally dishonest as i will be driving it for one month of the year, but what the insurer doesn't know won't hurt them right? at the end of the day i don't want to throw away my no claims bonus. does one even have to have a telephone call these days to buy such insurance? i have electronic copy of my no claims bonus. could do with some more ideas people, and if my suggestion here would work out ok.
