Free hotel or free fuel!?

I have to go to St Albans in a couple of weeks todo some training - I've been offered accomodation and/or fuel allowance which is currently around 30p/mile. The commute would be from NW Kent across the Dartford Crossing and round the M25 and then up to St Albans, and it is 2 blocks of wed-sun, so only 3 working day travel days.
I would stand to profit nicely on the travel allowance but would the commute drive me mad, although staying in a Holiday Inn or similar would probably not be much improvement!?
Realistically how much time should I leave, anyone do this Kent to South Herts. commute roughly?
