Taxing a car with VIC marker
Discussion
Just wondering...
My battered old jalopy has - I've just found out - a VIC marker from when a Polish lorry driver did some Cat C damage. It's safe etc, just a bashed in door on a very old car = economic write off.
Now I understand that with a VIC marker, you won't get a new V5, fine - I'm not selling it. But assuming it's insured & MOT'd, can you still renew the tax (with no change of ownership) if there's a VIC marker in place?
As it happens, I think I'm gonna scrap it as it also needs a test soon - but couldn't realy find a definative answer and dammit, I want to know!

The V5C can be applied for once the car has passed a VIC. Why not just get it booked in for its VIC? You don't need it to be taxed to get to and from the VIC (although it does need an MOT).
According to VOSA, "if you intend to tax the vehicle straight away at your DVLA Local Office, they may ask to see the VIC20. If you lose or have not been given the VIC20 then the DVLA record will still be updated automatically."
Which implies you need to get the VIC done in order to be able to tax the car.
