Can anyone recomend an insurer for a 17 year old?
Discussion
My brother will be insuring his first car soon (a 1999 1.2 vauxhall corsa im currently doing up) and ive just been having a quick look on insurance. Ive only looked on the basic sites (confused and compare the meerkat) but the cheapest i can get it is around 7000 on his own, 5000 with me or one of my parents as a named driver, or around 2000 with me as the main driver and him as the main.
I know that i will probably get a few cheaper quotes by calling specialists but i was wondering if the vast font of knowledge that is pistonheads had any recomendations?

That sounds really high, try Co-op, they did me a really good price and were great to deal with. Also they seem the only company that will still insure you 3rd party for other cars at that age which is useful.
It's definately worth him being in his own name because it really makes a difference having No Claims for the few years after that!

To those saying £2k sounds about right, that is only via a fronting policy.. Which I really do not recommend.
Let him be the main driver, partly because it's the law to declare correctly and partly so he can earn his own NCB, but add two middle-aged women as named drivers. Really does not matter who, but two is the optimum number. Play around with where is most cost-effective to park the car and things like that. Someone in the Admiral Group would probably be your best bet, especially since they offer 10-month policies - reducing premium amount, and also giving a year's NCB quicker.

Have you tried an S40, if a barge is what you want, the 1.6 is barely capable of moving so can't be that expensive to insure.
Yup, would much rather have a nice barge than some silly little hatchback (for a first car), (and then the year after the Panda will be mine
)I shall have to find out how much one of those snatch landrovers the MOD are selling would cost to insure. How epic would that be rocking up at college in a bleedin military landrover.

Sorry just to clarify by doing up i mean fitting a new engine and refreshing the brakes and suspension.
All standard though? As others have said there's no 'secret' to it - just use the comparison sites and start from there. Although Elephant were always reasonable when I was younger. And Norwich Union funnily enough, who put me in my first Jag at 20. samsoon19 said:

My thoughts word-for-word. Although I've had one issue with them regarding them taking a payment which wasn't mentioned when I renewed my insurance (first year renewal though) which left me a couple of hundred quid overdrawn, their response was very good. Got onto the phone once I'd realised (10 days or so after it had been taken, my account charges me daily for any overdraft) and credit to the bloke, if I'd been dealing with me I think I'd have hung up It's definately worth him being in his own name because it really makes a difference having No Claims for the few years after that!
Managed to calm down a bit, and after talking a bit more they accepted that their adviser got the payment schedule wrong and gave me a refund equivalent to my overdraft charges. That mistake asides, all dealings with them have been very pleasant. And as
