I've been passed a Renault Laguna (original facelift one on a W plate) by a family member. It's just had a big service inc water pump, cambelt and brakes, so I reckon is worth keeping and shedding. It's the 1.6 Alize.

Now, I'm coming from a Lexus IS200, I've had reasonable quotes on E36 and E46 328i's, Jag XJs, X types etc... Basically until today I've yet to have a quote for over £500.

I'm 22 and two thirds, have 5 years no claims, never had an accident (at fault or otherwise) or any other convictions (motoring or otherwise). Live in a good postcode etc...

Cheapest I've had for the laguna : £2275.

Why?! Chavs don't crash them (not that I know of, anyway), they've got a good safety rating, and it's worth peanuts, if anything.

What am I missing?

Weird that you've been quoted cheaper for E46s, but the 406 suffers from a "taxi effect" - it's possible that the Laguna is similar. A 1.8 petrol 406 costs slightly more to insure than my V6 A4 hehe

Also bear in mind that when you have just bought a car, it costs considerably more to insure than one you've owned for a number of years.

Assuming you've tried the usual comparison sites, try contacting some specialist brokers like Aon. They may get you a reasonable quote or at least explain whats not making you an attractive risk on this particular vehicle.

Cheers

Since when? I don't think I've ever had a cheaper quote than the ones I get after buying a new car.

Jesus!

My insurance is cheaper than that for a 2Litre Turbo Volvo S60 and I'm 24 with more crashes than a stunt driver!!

Scrap the Comparison Sites and try the following:
Elephant
Bell
Direct Line
Adrian Flux

HTH!

Over £2k for a 1.6 Renault yikes

Having driven a couple of Lagunas I don't think you can accuse them of those?!

What are you putting down as the car's value when getting these quotes? I've heard low value cars are a bad risk because people don't take care of 'em.

Well, cars I've owned and regularly driven have included; fiesta zetec, puma, Mercedes ML (the newer one), Lexus IS200, astras, focii etc...

The laguna isn't the last word in handling, but they're not crap? I've driven much worse... And as for brakes, some of the nicest brakes to use were in a Laguna!
