It doesnt have to be a car engine or one you have owned/operated
so mine is the Daimler benz 603 inline 12 as fitted to the WW2 german fighter airoplane the messerschmitt 109.
and why, its the smoothest engine i ever heard and very powerfull. it was designed in the 1930s
they dont make em like they used to :P

VR6 2.9, it makes an amazing noise has plenty of torque but revs like a 16V engine.

Also a big fan of the wanklel in the RX8 PZ edition with it's Prodrive exhaust.

These are car's I've driven/owned. Obviously V8 are awesome and there is something about the metallic rasp of the E46 M3.

I've just got in from a thrash in my GTE 16V. Again I wonder how they got away with it 20 years ago!

So, (C)20XE Vauxhall 2.0 16V "Red top" for me! Lovely raspy growl and just seems to thrive on punishment (with clean oil of course).

Never driven one, but on paper a 50k mile service interval on the Cadillac North Star V8 always gelled with my propensity for lazyness.

Plus american V8s seem to have a characterful growl Merc/BMW ones just dont have.

You're all wrong. Chevy LS1 (and later derivatives) because it's one of the smallest, most powerful and tunable V8 engines in the world. Stick a couple of turbos on a crate engine and you can get 700hp with no other modifications no problem.

Hondas F20B6 and H22A engine. Both are very responsive, frugal when needed yet can put out plenty of power. The F20B6 also has a very aggresive sounding vtec engagement.

Fords YB Turbo. A design which is essentially over 30 years old, yet when tuned right, can still pump out 800hp or more. One guy from Greece runs his on methanol, and gets over 1000hp from his! An amazing engine, which surely has to be up there with the all time greats.

Toyota 2JZGTE formally put in MK4 supras but found it's way into various Toyota applications, this aside, it isa fantasticly tunebale engine and sounds fantastic.

I think purely the fact that 1000bhp is not uncommon to see because it is now more than achievable.

In terms of the noise (and not exactly low on power either) the ubiquitous Rover V8. Ideally fitted in something lightweight and roofless like my neighbour's decatted Chimaera. cloud9

Merlin gets my vote, history aside. Just that sound alone being enough to have stopped me completely in my tracks whenever I've had the fortune to hear it. cloud9

More generally speaking, I've a huge soft-spot for any V12 and also the BMW S62, for what it does as much as how it sounds:
