Kinda of stuck here. Only 4 months in with my E34 530 Touring and as much as I love it, my combination of short journeys and its thirst are brutalising me!

Where my conundrum lies is I need a (comparatively) economical mid sized estate with a little luxury for not much more than £1500. Have had a brief look at an E36 328 touring and have been pondering an E30 316 touring but my worries here are being stuck in the same boat of either high consumption or woefully underpowered in the case of the E30 (even though I love them).

I really do adore the E34 but have to bow out and admit that 16MPG is just too much for my meagre wallet : (

Any suggestions as to what to replace with?

Good food for thought.

Probably right an E34 with smaller engine would ideally be the one, but finding one in the same spec as mine and a touring I figure would be nigh on impossible!

The SAAB looks ace out of that bunch, had an 850 before and frugality was not something it did well, the V40 looks clean but not too sure about those. I've been trawling the trader and PH classifieds, but it's always tough viewing replacements.

The search goes on!

Not the E30 316. I once got 11mpg out of mine when "pushing on". Carburettors don't help economy.

I had an E34 530 V8. Averaged 29.8mpg over 130,00 miles. Excellent car. You sure its working OK?

I went from an E34 530 V8 to and E34 525 for similar reasons and consumption only improved by 1mpg. I found I had to really rev the 525 to get the performance and the engine didn't suit the autobox.

16mpg?! Presumably you're doing lots of short journeys - whats your annual mileage?

Very short journeys, my work commute is only around 5 miles each way with the odd longer journey every now and then.

MPG averages around 17.5 - 18.5 most times, long journeys it's ace, when I went to a friends down in Andover, over the trip down, a further trip to Southampton and the trips back it averaged nearer 30MPG. So it works as it should, which is brilliant over long drives, but I don't think I do the milage to do it justice. More importantly, I'm worried if I keep it any longer I'll not only be affecting my wallet but the engine itself and I'd rather this goes to someone who can really appreciate it for the beauty it is.

Overall yearly I don't think my milage ever exceeds 7000 or so.

...then your chances of saving money by buying a new car are very, very small. Even if you improve by 10 mpg over that distance it's only about £700 a year.

...unless you can get by with something very basic,

  • Cheap to buy
  • Cheap to tax
  • Cheap to fuel
  • Cheap to insure
  • Cheap to repair

Maybe off topic (had a bit to drink, so I'm not completely here)

I'm sure the 318 had a better mpg than the 316, just something to consider.

(Hang on! If I'm not completely here, and they say "I'm not all there." Where am I?)

Looks tidy but over two hours away from me unfortunately : (

Got a couple of E36 328 Tourings to view tomorrow, hopefully one of them will be alright. Anyone had any experience with the 328 touring? Can find lots about the 328 Sport but not so much on the tourings.

Exactly. And for those long journeys the E34 is the place to be!

The same journeys in that 2.8 will only give you 20-22 mpg. I average 23 mpg a tank usually in my E39 528, thats pretty much 50/50 dual carriage way/town driving. Worst tank 18 mpg, best 41.

I drive hard and usually short trips I got 25mpg from my E36 328 - they are quicker than stats suggest too.

Well nice to see everyone kind of echoing what I thought. I have been thinking of going the billy basic route as a daily, after all I still have my Eunos as my fun car, so I'm not going to lose out entirely on driving thrills.

Thanks for the input chaps, PH is helpful as ever : )

That 520 has been sounding more and more tempting the more I think about it though.. if everything else goes to pot and it's still there I may take the trip down and have a look!

Exactly where I was coming from. If you like the E34, and are confident it's a fairly decent, reliable car, it's probably just not worth the risk of changing to something with similar running costs but a smaller engine, for the small amount you'll save.

If it was me I'd be thinking diesel 306 or something, or staying where I was.
