I thought it might be interesting to hear other peoples "comedy" part exchange quotes, having just been offered sub £3k for a car, that on autotrader, even for the ropiest example i could find, goes for at least £6k, by a main dealer!

Suprisingly, i didn't take them up on their offer........ laugh

So, what's you're worst offer ?? ;-)

£1500 is apparently a good offer for 'just' a 2.0 focus banghead filled me with confidence that the sales guy knew what he is talking about dhead rolleyes

£500 for a 52 plate Astra convertible turbo

I dont care what either car is worth now so fed up with salesman who are either full of st or cant be bothered to talk to you & people who want to waste your time with stupid p/ex offers im going to keep both cars till they fall apart around me or i fall apart inside them laugh

You generally get offered what the car would make at the auction, not what it could be sold for as a private sale. They need to make money and they won't if they offer you anywhere near a good private car. But there are some silly ones - i.e. I know someone who was just offered £220 for a 2001 corsa with 150k on it, with a full MOT. I know its hardly desirable, but you could put it on a 3 day auction on ebay or something and get more than £300 for a damaged one without anyone viewing.

Out of interest, what is the car?

£1450 for a 2005 307 when at the time exact ones were going for £3000 on autotrader. Excuse was that it had been in a major accident as the front wing which is made of plastic was slightly bent after I leaned on it once. Even after showing him the clear HPI check I did he still insisted it had been in a major accident and the wing didn't fit because the whole car and chassis was bent out of shape, wker.

Went 6 miles down the road got a much better offer and a much better car.

Seems a pretty typical trade-retail margin for one of those needing a little work although I'd expect closer to a £1,200 gross margin.

Were they "going for" that on AutoTrader, or were they asking prices of unsold cars? If you see a car asking £3k, do you just accept that, or how much do you think you'll try and get it for? How much will you actually get it for.

The "excuse given" aspect is a salesman too weak to acknowledge that the motor trade is a business and a difference between buying and selling prices for them is what makes the whole thing work.

If you want close to retail value for your cars, sell them yourselves. It's really not rocket science.

Turn it the other way around when you're thinking about it. If it were your business and your livelihood depended upon it, what value would you set vs. what retail price and likely return and what likely prep and marketing costs are you going to incur along the way to achieve it and how long do you think it will take to sell?

It's similarly amusing to people in the trade when people expect dealer retail asking prices for their PX, ignoring the need for a trade-retail margin and the additional work required to bring it up to a condition in which somebody might actually want to buy it. "Comedy values" work both ways...

HPI would only show if it's been written off, not if it had just been in a crash.

How many miles?

Condition? Tyres?

Not exactly the rarest car in the world either...

150k, needs a set of tyres, an Inspection II and there's a hole in the torque delivery from 2.5-3.5k, the clutch is on the way out and the ASC and airbag lights are on. Needs 3 panels Dentmastering, 4 alloys refurbing, needs a new screen and a bumper and bonnet painting as heavily chipped and scuffed and has a wonky PDC sensor.

Other than that it's fine. hehe

Etc.

2 answer both questions: Yes I know an HPI won't show all crashes but the guy was making out it had been written off, and no I wasn't expecting £3000 for it since I know trader's do have to make a profit. I got £1850 for it down the road which I was happy with.

Literally just been serviced, has a full BMW service history (and by that i mean a FULL one, not one of those autotrader style full, well except for when it wasn't main dealer serviced full ;-)), recently had (all OEM parts, with recipts from BMW!)
turbo,
clutch + DMF
intake manifold
prop shaft rubber donut
4 x dampers
4 x top mounts
all rear suspension bushes replaced and re-tracked / aligned
2 x front wishbones and compliance bushes
2 x front discs and pads

Tyres are about at 5-6mm (pilot sport 3's all round)

It's an Msport, rare manual car, with factory tow bar, with only 1 previous owner.

Going by autotrader, they are advertised for between £7k and £6.5k, so i would have accepted a trade in at anything over say £5k. So to be offered less than £3k was a joke tbh. Funnily enough, when i offered £15k for the car they were selling for £25k, they weren't so impressed ;-)

Audi offered £2500 under book “as the DSG gearbox is known to go at around 3 years old”, which is handy to know when you are looking at buying a 2 year old DSG.

That being the case, there's no way on Earth I'd have given that away to the trade for any money as such a car would find a home on the private market for a considerably fairer sum than any dealer would give.

I'd have obtained an underwritten value from a suitable specialist for a month hence as a worst case scenario, attempted to sell it myself in the interim, and treat the car I'm buying as a separate transaction, to be concluded not before that future point. Makes it a one-way haggle on the car you're buying too...

My comment wasn't intended as a dig against your car/situation BTW, just a light-hearted perspective to illustrate from the other side of the table of the sorts of things we get presented and people do expect retail money for and have to be diplomatically "educated". I'd go so far as to say that's the hardest part of the job to handle well to everyone's satisfaction.

I agree, that sounds like a decent idea!

The issue is that i am looking for a LCi manual 330d, and they are rocking horse! The car i looked at is only the 2nd one in 8months in the AUC system!

I think i will buy a cheepo shed, sell mine privately, and just have to wait till another one turns up

When you add up what the dealer will have made on the sale(s) of the car, i don't think we need to be too concerned for them. (car was sold new by same dealer, making then a decent cut, they then bought it back from the original owner (no doubt offering him a LOT less than it is now stickered up at), and now they offer me a pitance for my car........ (and it's up for good money now also)

Years ago went with the then GF to look at a car in a forecourt...

She had a Metro at the time, (yeah, I know!), and noticed when we drove in that he had an almost identical one on the forecourt with a price of £4250 in the windscreen. I thought, "Cool!"

We had a sniff around the car she was interested in and asked what we'd get as a trade in for her Metro. I thought we were on to a good thing as it'd just passed it's MOT.

He offered £450!

I pointed out the older and higher mileage but otherwise identical car on his forecourt with a price on it of almost ten times the trade in he'd offered us and he just said that he couldn't sell it at that price so had to hedge his bets.

Fair enough, it is a business after all, but we walked away.

I love it the way people want top book for their car when part exing but still want their new car nice and cheap too.
Shock horror, garages are in it to make money.
If it was that easy to get the price that cars are 'going for' then sell it privately.

I'm interested to know if you think £2750 is "top book" for a 330d ?

And the car i was looking at was what i would call "decent" money too (£29k, 59plater LCI 330d)

Now i was expecting to get "done" on the part ex bit, but not to that extent ;-)

So £1450 was a "comedy" amount .nono
