I guess the F01 must have pushed the price of the E65 down a bit as decent spec lowish miles 3yr old examples now breaking under the magical £20k barrier. Having looked at oily barges, it beats the A8, S-class, phaeton etc on economy, performance (bimmers to tend to do that) but largely also price.

Ergo, i want one. Clearly they are a big car, but I am sure there are pitfalls, things to look out for etc

Shall we discuss?

I think it'd be rather excellent, to be honest. I'm not going to talk you out of it. At £20k there's still a lot of depreciating to be done, however. The little garage I drive past on the way to work had a T-reg E38 735i up for £750 a few weeks ago. I would have bought it (pending it not being a total dog) if I had somewhere to put it!

Lovely cars.
It will be a £7-8k car in two to three years but that's not bad at all. Huge boot huge interior space comfort and so much spec

Agreed; plus (and I know I'm probably in the minority here) but I really like the design (the first Bangle-era ones, not the dull facelifts) in a big, imposing, I'm-a-CEO-bhes kinda way.

I had one for a year. They are bigger than you think. I almost got it beached in a multi story car park which then meant I had to avoid them altogether. So if you can live without multi story parking go for it.

well it would be on a loan tbh, M&S car loan to be precise, with a £6.5k deferred amount till then end, so £7 would be roughly evens. Might check an older one out just to be a bit safer.

I had the sport. The sport seats are not as good as the standard seats imo. Which is why I got rid of it.

The only reason I'm going to try and talk you out of it is that we might be looking at the same car

Good luck

If you thinking it'll lose £12k over 3 years why not get a new one?

Because near on 500 for three years plus a 3k deposit is 20 grand? And you are limited to 10k a year ergo what's the point of getting a diesel... apart from that it's a great deal wink

Definitely get an older one. Don't go blowing £20K on an E65 when you can get a F01 for about £27K.

I would spend £15K on one at a push.

I bought a full spec 745i in 2008, currently worth less than 25% of purchase price. Top rate tax every year, and total running cost so far of around 10k. Great car and electrically reliable but mechanically I've had big bills on active suspension twice now. I use a specialist not a main dealer in general to keep costs down, but parts can be scarce in some cases which can drive costs up. I have maintained it regardless
of cost, which with a car like this is I think the only way. Let it get shabby and what is the point...

Mine is currently worth sub 5k with <85k on the clock...

it's a trim level not a benchmark. Have you got something constructive to add? If not, you know what to do!

interesting regarding the seats, maybe sport spec is not suited to this type of car...

I have spotted the deals on new, but I'm not quite ready to buy and the funding probably disappears at end 2011. However warranty would be useful clearly...

If you look at the sports seats they have big 'wings' for the shoulders and its these that bothered me.

However from experience I'd say buy a maserati - at least it will be worth something when you have had enough...
