I'm looking for a pick up as I'm building a house.

I need it to work so 1 ton minimum and NOT a crew cab as I want to actually get stuff in it.

4x4 might be handy but not essential.

I'd rather get something cheap but I was a bit surprised at the prices so it looks like I'll have to pay £3k to get anything worth having.

Something that has some performance would be nice

Obvious choices seem to be:

Ranger / B2500 2.5 Turbo
L200 2.5 Turbo

Anything else worth looking at - Hi lux seem to be non turbo so presumably a bit slow

I'd happily get a Ram or F150 if I could find one on LPG but as yet I can't.

Seriously, could you get a Ram or F150 and pay someone to convert it after you've bought it? Is it financially worthwhile to do?

Decent gas convertions are £2k on a V8 and you'd be lucky to get £500 back.

I've had a few F150's last one was a 4x4 crew cab on LPG but it was too nice to work.

I was tempted by a 8.2 V10 Ram but when he said it gave 10mpg if you were gentle even I couldn't face that.

Aren't the V10 Rams also the nice ones (leather, toys etc)? If an F150 was too nice to work a V10 ram would be too.

Get a Transit tipper, then you can collect scrap at the weekends.

Ford Ranger 2wd single cab. Cheap to buy and maintain, 1 and a bit ton payload and decent enough to drive about in. £2k will get you a decent one. I wouldn't bother with 4X4 and higher ground clearance if you aren't venturing off road often.

Don't exact to do much more than 65 in any of those - cart springs and light rear ends mean you really don't want to be doing much more than 65. I started my driving career in pickups (Ford P100, Bedford Brava/Isuzu KB, Pug 504, L200) and really none of them were remotely quick, didn't go well, didn't stop well, didn't handle well.

I dunno what sort of engine/displacement/power the Hilux has/produces, but my Shogun with the same 2.5TD as the L200 redefined slow for me.
The Shogun weighs as much as a small country though...

Single cab pick up would be much lighter (/better).

When you say 1 ton, do you mean payload?

Are any of the ones you sight really 1 tons? Isn't a Ram 1500 or F150 only a 3/4 ton truck?

Old Hi-Lux use the 2.4 VM Motori engine, same as the old Diahatsu Fourtrak.

I've driven loads of P100's but they are all rotten these days but I've seen 100+ plenty of times over the years.

The 2.5TD's seem to have 109-133bhp and can be chipped up a bit.

The Non turbos are around 70-80 !!!!

AFAIK the std UK stuff can all take a ton except the Jumbucks etc

The Yank stuff is technically rated lower - not sure why as its massively overbuilt.

Most of the time it'll be doors, timber and fence panels but occassionally it'll have a pack of tiles / bricks on which tend to be 1 ton.

Thats what I thought but it bloody won't.

I presume its because all the old pick ups ones are exported so there's a void in the market but at £2500 they've all done 180k + from what I've seen.

Could you not just get a Transit pickup like this?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-TRANSIT-PICKUP-/190...

Easier to get parts for, cheaper to buy, more choice, bigger load capacity etc?

yep, put a few broken fridges, washing machines, car batteries in your front garden, buy a high-vis jacket and develop an interest in 'dags'

wink

This any good??? http://vans.autotrader.co.uk/bodytype/pick-up/cabt...

My Dad's a builder and has had one of these for the past 5 years. He thought about trading it in a year ago but decided against it as he likes the fact that it is lower than most L200's and its easy to get the mixer on and off.

Yes that's the kind of thing I'm thinking about but I suspect that the non turbo and AT says 113miles away which probably means 150.

Thread was just checking I hadn't missed a Model of pick up really or if there were any problems - like the Navara crank issue.

In fairness I hadn't considered one mostly because of the image but compared to everything else it has got better functionality and seems very cheap.
