Do I want one?
I'm on the hunt for a motorway mile muncher, and I've been offered one for my MX5. It's got an ABS sensor fault, and an engine management light lit apparently because the downstream Lambda sensor has just been changed?
It's a 2.4 5 cyl auto, what's that going to do mpg wise? I know the T5 auto's can do 35mpg + on the motorway thanks to a silly low torque converter lock up, what about the N/A's?

Fuel economy isn’t great, ours does just over 30mpg on a run, 2.5 litre 170bhp manual. However this could be down to an engine management warning light that’s been on for ever, despite several garage visits to get it fixed. Your prospective car might be the same and the fault could be:
Oxy sensors, there are 2 and they’re not cheap
Cat, not cheap
Throttle body, not cheap
They’re also prone to brake judder.
Otherwise they’re very comfortable and quiet, stereo is nice, heater is strong and aircon good enough for living in the UK. Ours has only broken down once, it wouldn’t start thanks to a flat battery but they seem to keep going well. Just expensively.
I would say you might want one, but probably not that one with its warning lights on

That's a great car for the money. I ran an old 2.9 years ago and it really grew on me. The cabin was a great place to be, making light of 200 mile journeys and the hi-fi was something else. Funny that the OP should mention warning lights though. Mine lit up like a Christmas tree eventually and I got shot of it, as opposed to spending a disproportionate amount of money trying to trace the faults. If I was after a cheap luxo barge, I'd have another in a heartbeat. I would walk with those faults if I was you. They aren't that rare.
My V70 with the 2.5 10v engine in manual used to struggle to do mid 30's and dipped well below 30 in town.
The T5 will be pottering at 55-60 to achieve 35+, they are mid 20's cars in the real world.
Lovely seats though and the engine is remarkably unstressed. It has the lovely 5 cylinder burble.
Even 6+ years after selling mine I still miss it.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Interesting, so basically, everyone's pretty fond of them if they've had them, and they cover motorways with ease? I'm sat at like 55mph nearly all the way, half of my commute is a single carriageway stretch of the A1, so it's a case of pick a lorry and sit behind it, I hardly do any town mileage.
I'll have a look at this one I think, it's not a sale, it's a straight swap for my MX5, which would be easier for me, so I'll take a peek and see what I reckon.
Thanks chaps.

I have a 2.4 S80 170 HP SE.
Bought for very little with an ABS light and an emissions sensor light that come on when it feels like it. Still not got around to sorting it, but this is a classic fault usually brought on by a faulty ABS ECU.
Fixes are an expensive replacement, sending off for a £50 ECU repair or following the soldering instructions available online.
Car is comfy, cruises at any speed, and will do 35 mpg if I can keep it to 70. Having said that I'm not convinced that the ABS fault is not affecting my Lamba readings and accordingly fuel consumption.
Only done 18K so far, but in an 95k car and seen no bills.

I'd be getting the soldering iron out then! unless its super fiddly surface mount stuff, most people will have no chance fixing that unless you do that kind of thing for a living.Bought for very little with an ABS light and an emissions sensor light that come on when it feels like it. To save £500 I'd have a go. As I can get it done by someone who knows what they are doing and gives a reasonable warrenty for £50 that's my route when I get to it.
