Hi

We need help or advice fairly urgently! We're currently driving through Devon towing a fairly heavy boat, but the car keeps going into limp home mode.

The car is a 2006 Audi A3 2.0 TDI 140 Quattro, rated to tow 1,800kg, we're towing approximately 1,500kg but up and down some quite steep hills.

Any ideas what could be wrong? The car certainly isn't struggling with the weight and has towed similar boats on several occasions, although not for a while. I'm thinking it's a boost problem as it happens when we're revving the engine quite high up hills. Perhaps a boost hose collapsing? Engine Management light is on but have no vagcom with us.

It's getting rather frustrating having to keep switching the engine on and off on each hill!!

Can anyone offer any comments or advice? Has anyone a schematic of this engine on PDF they could post? Interested to see which hoses do what under the bonnet.

Thanks,

Dan

Should I have put this in the Audi forum?

Its most likely that its going into Limp Home mode because of overboost. The vanes on your VNT turbo must be sticking open when at full or near full throttle and as such is providing to much boost to the engine. Engine goes into limp home mode unless switched off and then on again. The best way to sort it is take it for a good thrash uphill towing something heavy...oh wait, that is what your doing.

If it was a loose hose or something, the car wouldn't go in and out of limp mode so easily and the hose would come off and run like poo.

Try not to back off the throttle to quickly if you've got your pedal to the floor as thats probably the easiest way to get it into limp home mode! Ease off the throttle slowly so turbo doesn't overboost.

Probably not going to be helpful but I know that throttle bodies quite often go faulty on these - possibly being caused by the high revs?

Thanks for the posts.

Yes, remember this issue before and have used diesel fuel additive a year or so ago to treat/prevent it.

Same thing happened on our alhambra whilst towing and it was a boost pipe. The bracket was failing and it was going into limp mode to prevent further damage. It reset itself after a few hours and didn't reoccur for another 50 miles. Can you get it towed home . RAC? Tbh an A3 is a little lightweight for a decent sized boat

Whatever is causing it, chances are that you aren't going to be able to fix it. Maybe find a local garage somewhere and ask there? A smallish car with 140bhp towing a 1.5 tonne boat does seem to be rather pushing it. That is going to be well over 3 tonnes total.

Car is rated to tow 1,800kg believe it or not! Quite surprising really.

It's not happening as much now, trying to keep the revs low and throttle as smooth as possible. Seems to have enough torque to pull itself up the hills at low revs without any bother. It's just quite slow!

Must be the blocked vanes issue I think now we've had a think about how it's behaving.
