heater headache. help needed

Hi guys. Just bought a megane 225, 55 plate. Love the car but the heater only works on the highest setting (4).
Tried changing the resistor with a new one from Renault. When I did this the heater didn't work at all so put the old one back in.
Any ideas what the problem could be?
