Best "Car Derived" van for new business (£1-2K)??
Discussion
Good morning chaps,
Looking for a van for my business. It will also be used for marketing whilst the wife is out and about in it.
Seeing as the wife is driving it sometimes, it will need to have a bit of poke (no pun intended) and be not too cumbersome to drive...
Seen a fair few kangoos on the road, and they tend to be for the most part around 1-2 inches of my arse on a motorway. So i assume they are nippy???
Must be reliable, frugal and at least over 70bhp. If need i will remap the bloody thing....
no 335D mind you!

Astra all day long, had one (1.7d) and loved it. Not fast by any means but just nice(ish) to pootle about in. Avoid Combo's like you would avoid a Lion in a lift, hatefull money pits.
Plenty of Astra's about for that money too.
Fiesta van would be worth a look too I would imagine although I haven't driven one.

Kangoos are great little vans. Not nippy though, the 1.5d i was using for a bit made 70bhp. Not too bad if it was empty, but if you started piling stuff in the back, it got slooooooooow.
Cheers,I'm trawling through a search on pistonheads. Seems a lot of people like the Berlingo...
I might up my budget to 3k depending on my accountant!

How about these?

There's a 1.8 VVC 180bhp petrol version. Although, the 2.0 L-series diesel is actually a decent engine if you're scared of HGF.

We currently have a Fabia VRS which we use as a van. I have removed the backseats and throw all our goods in the back.
I feel as though i need something a bit more usuable. I feel a bit s
t using the VRS as a van and having all the interior all chipped and scuffed etc.Lets Torque said:
I would go for an Astra/Combo 1.7 if I were you.
We have the 'new' Berlingo 1.6, but they won't be in your price range.
I don't know how good the previous Berlingo's are, but if ours is anything to go by then it is a good van. You may even get a 2003 face-lift in your budget

Will look into this today.
As always i tip my hat off to you lot!

VW Caddy mk2?
The SDi version comes packed with a mighty 68 bhp! To be fair to it though, keeping up with traffic really isn't a problem even when loaded up. It's inclines on motorways where you feel the lack of power, depressing the accelerator feels like treading water. It is frugal though, and the engine will keep going long after humanity has vanished from the planet.
The TDi has a bit more oomph to it with a healthy 90 bhp as standard, but easily tweaked to 140 bhp. Prices for the TDi are a lot stronger than the SDi.
Both engines can happily run on veg oil if you wanted to.
Personally, I do prefer the looks of the Caddy to those of other manufacturers.

How about a Ford Transit Connect similar to this:

Not overly quick but more practical and not bad at all to drive.

I have a MK2 Caddy Van TDI, biggest problem with that shape van is the variable vane turbos. utter chocolate. The SDi version comes packed with a mighty 68 bhp! Mine now has a non VNT 1.9 tdi engine in it, as well as electric mirrors, windows, half leathers and aircon

As a former courier...
Berlingos are like cockroaches - 250k plus without issues. Massively useful yet frugal. Plenty of choice. Higher power ones go like stink yet remain economical.
Connects - not so economical, huge amount of space, 70bhp is a slug, get a 90 or remap it and enjoy a great drive. LX has lots of toys. Not as reliable as a Berlingo. Injector issues.
Combo - not so comfy. Turbo issues.
Astra - fine if you don't want to carry anything tall.
VW Caddy - overpriced. Nice enough van though if not as roomy as the Berlingo or Connect.

That MG is a proper van with a proper rear load area and no rear seats. They were relatively popular for a while as people were getting them intead of company cars due to a tax break. (I can't remember exactly how it worked.) We currently have a Fabia VRS which we use as a van. I have removed the backseats and throw all our goods in the back.

They weigh under 1200kg empty so it goes very well for a van and easily tows my racecar at the speed limit without issues.
My dad loves driving it - commenting on the power and gear change...
Actually the most comfortable and easy to drive vehicle I have at the moment so it's become my daily-driver. mine has a plywood bulkhead and the rear has vibration / sound dampening mats on the side panels so its very quiet as well.
The newer 1.6 HDi engine has the same power and torque but is more economical.
I've heard the non-turbo dervs are dead slow and not very economical.

What will you be carrying(weight/size of load) and what about access to the rear? Side door(s) important? Currently driving a 51 plate Fiat Scudo, Citroen & Peugeot offer the same. Very practical with two side loading doors and twin rear doors. One of the reasons I chose it was the 2.0 HDi engine, 110bhp and a good slug of torque. Drove the 1.9D, non turbo, and it was gutless IMO.
