Different tyre depths same axle
Discussion
Need to replace one tyre on back of car(driven wheel)The middle of the tyre is down to the wear bar,now the other tyre has got about 4mm left,I know its good practice to replace both but if I replace the said tyre with the same as the other side what are the practical implications?

If you're driving like a granny you won't notice much difference.
If you're giving it a bit of welly then you might find one wheel loses traction before the other.
This will cause either
a) a yellow flashing light on the dash to warn you it's doing something clever with the diff.
b) you will crash.
Or perhaps something in between.
Personally I try and keep my tyres the same – or at least in the same half life if you see what I mean.
If it's over half worn I'll swap both.
If it's under half worn I'll just swap one.
Depending on the car and what I'm planning to do in it.
If you replace both – you can always flog the partworn on ebay to offset the cost.
It's surprising what people will pay for them.
