I've always loved the mk1 RS and noticed that prices have come down a little since I looked last.
Have priced stop dropping do you think and if so, do you think the good examples might start going back up?

It seems like they have a strong following and suspect diff aside are supposed to be great cars, even now.
Or will it just be a big money pit on repairs and keep depreciating?

Dont know about go up, but the price may remain strong for a good one as its a bit of an ethusiasts car.
I cant see the prices plummet on a decent one, so get a nice one and its cheap motoring.

Quite a few seem to be modified, not sure if this would hinder the values at all?
I guess there are lots of "Fast Ford" fans out there...

Unless it's immaculate and FSH, low mileage, etc, then I suspect not.

I think that if you use a good one lightly, keep it standard and service it well then you will not be exposed to much depreciation. Though buying a cheap one won't ruin you in depreciation if you're lucky with running costs but I would guess most that have been used need quite a lot of stuff replacing to feel as good as they did new.

They are only depreciating as people are putting miles on them now. I paid 12k for mine 4 years ago which had around 13,000 on the clock at the time. A car with similar mileage would cost about the same now.

With your budget you'd get a nice low mileage example.. but if you plan on modifying then buy on that's already been done.

A fair amount of owners are members of the RS owners club, so get signed up on the forum for more info.

I am. R26 is still top of the pile. But I started thinking about depreciation and what other cars are out there.
I'd dismissed the Focus RS because of its age, but if they are reliable and won't depreciate as much then it is worth looking at.

Only problem I can see is, if I get a really nice one it would still have to be a daily driver and in turn affect the resale - but not nearly as much as an R26.

It will probably just be a case of whatever better deal comes up first.

Mine has been very reliable.. I've covered nearly 30,000 miles.. and have done a number of track days and hoons.. Its been solid.. The only thing that I've needed to replace is the thermostat housing (which is a known issue) and cost around £100.

If its a daily driver, is cruise control important as you don't have it in the RS?

If I were you i'd do some more research into both on reliability.. French in general are perceived as being poor, but I ran a 306 dTurbo for 6 years and 60,000 hard miles and it never missed a beat..

I was initially worried about the French thing, but the R26 seems to be a solid car.
I could probably live without cruise. Nice thing to have, but can't say I would really miss it. I will miss heated seats more! smile
