Banning smoking in cars (excludes wheelspins etc...)
Discussion
Probably old news......?
Just heard on the wireless that the government are proposing a ban on smoking in cars/vehicles. I smoke and often light up in the car, especially on dull motorway drives. In no way does it distract me from driving and hasn't caused a problem in the past (apart from health implications) that I know of....
I will always light up in the car, ban or no ban. I can understand the smoking ban in pubs, restaurants and elsewhere, but in the confines of my vehicle I'll continue to have smoke. And yes - I do put my butts in the ashtray!
What else can we outlaw?

Well it's more likely to occupy your hands and cause a crash than eating a Mars bar and that's already banned.
When it gets dropped into your lap / blown back into the rear seats the panic / smoke / fire is very distracting too and I've seen a lot of burnt seats over the years.
It's also very easy to spot / police / fine so I'm actually surprised they haven't done it before.
Personally I think we should have more freedom and that there are a hell of a lot of better things to worry about.

Maybe it doesn't distract you but i've seen it distract plenty of other people whilst driving. I think this should have been banned along with using a mobile whilst driving IMO.Just heard on the wireless that the government are proposing a ban on smoking in cars/vehicles. It may distract me, but it's yet to cause me any concerns - I fully support the phone ban and it's one of my 'pet hates' on the road and it's flouted beyond belief.
If banning smoking in the car does carry points/fine then I'll cease from doing it as I value my licence. I can see issues with policing it though. Easy money to be made.

Reading the BBC's take on it it doesn't sound like the Government are proposing anything of the sort. It seems to be the BMA suggesting it on health grounds to protect others from secondhand smoke. So despite most journeys involving no passengers they want to ban it anyway?
Sounds like a non-story to me.

A spokesman for the Department of Health in England said: "We do not believe that legislation is the most effective way to encourage people to change their behaviour."
He said instead a marketing campaign would be launched in the spring which would focus on the dangers of smoking in the home and car.

Whats funny is for the last 2 years I thought this WAS illegal, I do smoke in my car, and have been very shifty around Police/paranoid when one was following me and i was smoking.
Then I happened to ask an Officer during a "routine stop check" and he told me its not illegal.
fail
My mum thought the same & started criticising me for smoking on one of the rare occasions she was in my van. She still didn't believe me when I told her it was only illegal in Co. owned vehicles etc. Then I happened to ask an Officer during a "routine stop check" and he told me its not illegal.

I didn't think it would ever happen but wasn't sure. Thanks for confirming what I thought.
Sounds like a typical bit of lazy radio journalism - take a story, condense it into a snappy soundbite to grab attention and ignore the important details. If anything it does show a refreshing change that the Government aren't jumping on the ban it bandwagon. After Labour's nanny state approach to protecting us from ourselves with legislation it's quite nice to be treated as an adult.
Personally I'd like the BMA to focus on more important things, such as hospital-acquired infection rates. I do wonder, if smoking in cars was banned, whether having our roads filled with agitated drivers craving for a cigarette would be a good thing? I know from experience, that can be far more distracting than actually having a cigarette.
