I've just got myself a 2007 S6 which is on variable servicing. The next service isn't due for a further 9000 miles however I thought I'd go for an interim oil and filter change for peace of mind.

Given that the vehicle is over 3 years old, I decided to call up my local franchised dealer to obtain a price. They quoted me an astonishing £287 for an oil and filter service. Now if the figure was closer to the £200 Mark, I would have gone for it, however at this price I think it's a bit steep.

Although I acknowledge that this is a big engine and requires around 8 litres of VW504/507 approved oil, the same can be had from Opie for under £90 and I can't see the filter and sump washers coming in at over £15?

I'm going to check out a couple more local indies who will hopefully provide slightly more reasonable quotes.

At £100 or £120 per hour, it's not mad.

Women spend that on a haircut.

That sounds about the average price for an oil change from a main dealer to be honest. You have to remember that with labour rates around the £100 an hour mark it doesn't take long to rack up that amount. Is it a total ripoff? Certainly but you'd be amazed at the number of people who still won't take their cars anywhere else. I was speaking to a guy at work just recently who had his run flat tyres changed on his BMW for the princely sum of £400 each. Went I told him he could have got them for half that price he refused to believe me saying they were not "BMW Approved". Some people really deserve to be fleeced to be honest.

I choose to go to a specialst indie who does a better job for half the price. For the money I save I can wash my own car thanks.

I suppose with labour rates of over £100, the price can easily get racked up to higher figures.

I've got a friend who is a tech at a local Ferrari dealership and they had recently held an open day to entice past customers with older cars back into the fold with a tour around the new facilities and the offer of a lower hourly rates for cars older than 3 years. It obviously seems that Audi aren't interested in such offers.

There are a few indies close to me who I'll try. I'm also down at Awesome GTI who are a VAG specialist tomorrow so will get a quote from them.

I would have said that is pretty steep for just an oil and filter change. I used to use a main Honda dealer to have an oil and filter change on my Civic Type-R inbetween 12,000 mile services and it was never over £100 even getting them to use more expensive fully synthetic oil.

My 350z is booked in for a level 1 service next week with a main Nissan dealer and the price for that is £119.

I think Audi dealer services costs are quite high though, along with a lot of other premium brand manufacturers.

rofl agreed. I also happen to know some BMW garages charge £125/hr, a mechanic will be given 20minutes to carryout a routine service. The customer is charged a full hours labour, so the actual labour charge is £375/hr. The price people pay for a stamp!

£150.00 incl oil/filter etc and labour. Get the oil from Opie as suggested and the filter online from somewhere. Take to an Indy. Job jobbed.

No argument here, but it costs bugger-all to run a salon. It costs an awful lot to run a gin-palace Main Dealership.

Exactly. I needed the rear coil springs replaced on my BMW Z4 - quote for BMW £440! An absolute joke.

I bought the springs myself for £50 each, fitted both in 45 minutes. An EASY job, BMW should have been able to do this job in no time with their specialist equipment and knowledge. So actually, their labour rate in this instance was £453/hr!

Why do people go to dealers? Last oil and filter change on mine, with 5.1l of top quality oil - £133 and done in a couple of hours.

They truely are unbelievable at the moment, I was speaking to my specialist and even he was surprised by their stock levels.

He called about rear discs and springs for a 166 and even Alfa don't hold those in stock, but ECP had it sitting on the shelf and ready to go. You do have to watch some of their pricing though but on the whole have been impressed.

They will most likely be cheaper as would VW no doubt with the fixed prices they have, afterall it is a VAG car why do you have to go to AUDI ??

On the sump plugs I would always replace the seals but that is just me, if you have a look on Audi Sport or some other forums specific to Audi or VAG you will no doubt find some cheaper alternatives about who do as good if not a better job than either Awesome GTI or you local Audi specialist these guys are very good

I always used to be unimpressed with the £100 an hour labour rates.

Then some bright spark pointed out to me that it could just as easily be written as;
Labour £50.
Use of Tools £10
Use of garage with ramps'n'stuff £25
Use of specialist expensive tools £10
Random sundries that they don't charge for £5
