XJ (X351) 3.0d, what would be realistic offers to make?
Discussion
I know many have mixed views about it on this forum, but having looked at the alternatives only the S class came close in my dads eyes and that's ruled out since its near the end of its life cycle.
He's looking at luxury/premium luxury. There appear to be "10/60" Reg cars with sub 10k miles available in the £35-£40k range. There are also a few "11" reg cars near the top of this range and a couple with only ~500 miles (assume dealer registered) for a few £k more.
Given the current climate I'm a little unsure what realistic offers would be for these cars. So would greatly appreciate any experience/advice.
Thanks

Yes it is a cash sale. I'm not really looking for a precise answer, more an indication of what people have been getiing in the current climate. I usually like to phone around and play dealers off against each other, but you still need to have a ball park figure to aim for. I.E in this price range, for this type of car is 5%/10%/15% plausible.
If he doesn't wince a little before he makes the offer then its not low enough!
Shamelessly stolen from numerous posts re. house offers.
Maybe Jan is the best time for buying.
Post Christmas, salesman skint and weather rubbish.
Have a max. figure in mind that he wants to pay, make an offer towards end of Nov, if its refused wait until Jan. It would have probably lost a few grand in depreciation by then any way.

Houses are a little easier since you can see what they actually sold for (taking into account any cash back handers when near the stamp duty threshold). With cars unfortunately you just have the asking spread and asking nicely for people to share their experience :-D Shamelessly stolen from numerous posts re. house offers.

Normally I'd be looking for 10%, but wondering in the current climate should it be more. There do appear to be quite a few in a relatively tight spread. On the other hand perhaps that indicates much of the doldrums have been priced in already.
