The below car was featured earlier in one of the barge threads:

http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/merc...

It's a Classic trim level (the most basic), with cloth and wheeltrims yet has the 3.2 V6 engine in it. It seems an utterly bizarre combination. I thought at first it was an ex-police car but the sunroof made me think it wasn't. I'm sure someone wanted it from new but I'd rather have had the 2.8 Elegance or Avantgarde with Leather instead - would have allowed a better chance of resale too!

So, what's the oddest spec car you've either had, or sold as I know some of you are in sales. I used to be in car sales but can't think of anything particularly odd that I ever sold - other than Japanese spec Rover 600's when they were running them out ready for the Rover 75 launch.

(I realise it's often down to taste and preference on what people may order but for the sake of this thread, if it seems odd to 'one of us' then it probably is)

Often company cars have odd specs.

A chap in my office had £xxk to spend on a car.

A midrange spec cost £xxk + £200.

But, a low spec with loads of options cost £xxk exactly.
Even then, he'd spend all but £80 and then search through the options to spend the last £80.

So it might end up with colour coder interior boot trim (for £80) bit not colour coded seat trim.

It was all a bit odd.

I used to have a 1998 BMW 318tds (yeah yeah, I know, a 90bhp BMW smile) and it had a very weird spec.

Full upgraded wood interior. Not pretty but very expensive.
Full leather electric heated seats

NO aircon
NO sunroof
NO front foglights

No front fog lights would be a plus point for me. Completely useless things that get in the way of proper brake cooling.

I get the feeling this thread is going to simply be "cars speced in ways I wouldn't pick myself". hehe

I walked past an 04 plate British racing green Audi A6 yesterday, and the interior was what I can only describe as multicolour cuordoroy in Peach and a few other colours. Never have I seen anything like it. Anyone know what I saw?

I know what you mean but;

a) It had 90bhp. I can't think of a single time I really ever over stretched it.
b) The holes that the spots went into had never been made. They were completely covered over from factory so offered no extra ventilation anyway

Do non fog-lighted BMW's use that space for proper brake ducts?
Some of them certainly do; I don't know if they all do.

ETA: Ah, apparently they don't all. Maybe it's just M-cars?

This is a good explanation.

i just bought my Sales Manager a new model, base engine 2.2 diesel Jag XF.

But it's got some options he chose - chrome gills, boot spolier, etc. Looks XFR - ish (to the uneducated) , but it's cloth and poverty spec really. (although they are still a lovely place to sit for miles on the motorway even in this spec)

I was with my father in law when he purchased a brand new Meriva. He went for the 1.8 top of the range thingy and then began to go through the options list. He added a body kit, different wheels and some other bizzare options. The car came to just shy of £20k. He then asked for the A/C to be removed! The sales guy went to check this was possible, which it was, however there would be no cost saving and the car would be built as a special order. wobble

As you say a taste thing, but to me I would rather have the engine I want (maybe the 3.2) and do without leather seats. That said, leather seats are something I am not a fan of and not something I would pay extra to have (might pay extra over leather for a particularly nice cloth).

To other oddities, compare a UK and Irish spec Alfa 156 from when they came out. UK 2L would have had a leather interior and a radio / cassette player which the same trim level on an Irish model would have a cd player and a cloth interior. I would expect a CD player then to have been rather more in demand than leather seats.

All the best
