well its that time. a new van is to be bought. i'm in a better position than i was last time round. the van is used to ferry me and 2 tool boxes. most materials i use get delivered to site. and left for the client after job is done. i use it as a run about in my own time too. shopping, football, picking up the wee man. got a 5 1plate SWB transit just now, but after 130k miles its time for a change. sport transit,Merc Vito,VW transporter sport.

Do you really need a van to move two tool boxes?

Sport Transit... tyres wear heavily and people steal the wheels and bodykits..... think the VW would be a better van.... faster too.

have a look over on the ford transit forums http://fordtransit.org/forum

Caddy 2.0TDi suprisingly nippy n very well build but noisy. Or take a look at a Mitsubishi Outlander 4work. Economical, refined switchable 2wd/4wd

Transporter every day.

Buy well and the depreciation is minimal.

Agreed, I'm on my second. I lease mine, 3 payments up front, 4 year lease but this year I changed early to upgrade to a Kombi and I had something like £3500 of equity in the van. Decent discounts available, 12% if your really good at haggling, 10% is achievable. They are pretty sparse as standard, other vans have a lot more standard kit and it's easy to go a bit mad with the options list, I certainly did this time.

Personal opinion, but don't buy a Sportline, I've got a very well specced 140bhp lwb Kombi with a lot of extra kit for less than it would have cost me to buy a swb sportline panel van. You spec the bodykit and wheels as an option if that's your thing. If MPG is a consideration, a 180bhp van will do 26/27mpg as an average, the 140bhp around 33/34. I'll be changing mine again next year, I'll be getting another Kombi but with a 180bhp engine this time.

yes it will prob be a Vito dualiner sport. i believe you can get a rather nice remap for about £600. i like the 3 seats in the rear. good for the soft play duties on a Sunday.

Caddy isn't bad. I only have the 1.9TDi and it's entirely acceptable.

I'm liking my Vivaro, it's quite a quick van and nice to drive - very comfy and spacious.

You'll find a lot less love for the Vito than for the Transporter, having spent a lot of time in both I'd say it is down to what you prefer, the transporter is probably a bit tougher, retains more value (especially if it has windows and a partly trimmed interior, alloys etc), and has engines that are more well known.

The Vito feels like a big people carrier to drive, which is good or bad depending how you feel, and the newer ones are RWD which makes them feel nicer than a lot of small vans to steer. I have had 2x 110ps lwb traveliners that were totally reliable, comfortable to drive, had tons of space, could carry and tow heavy stuff at motorway speeds and were relatively inexpensive to run. The first one I had (2004) needed some rust work under warranty after 2 and a bit years but the 07 one was much better.

Vitos have to be 06 on to aviod rust.

And they lie about their load length - they include the 8" under the seats !!!

Quite a few expensive bits break - like the ignition barrel £700 IIRC
