I'm off up north later, I'll probably hit rush hour.

Which way do people reckon is the best bet?

M40 > A43 > M1

Or

M40 > M69 > M1

You'll struggle with the second option!

Take plenty of small coins with you. That way if the wandering unemployed hoards attempt to stop you, you can throw the coins out of the window and use the ensuing scrabble to allow you to make your getaway.

And travel during daylight. They mostly come out at night, mostly.

Depends where you're off to. If you're going to Manchester or Liverpool, may I suggest a stint on the M6 ?

I'm heading to Sheffield.

Any preference? As much as I like a fun drive, my main priority is getting there quickly with as little traffic as possible!

M40 - A43 - M1.

It's a friday, A43 will be slightly slow, but brum area will be horrible.

Cheers for the info. Experienced it around Birmingham... nightmare!

A43 better than going around Coventry?

I'd advise you to have second thoughts.

Dont they do all the wickerman burnings up there on the weekends?

I'm just north of Mansfield, and was in Stockley Park yesterday

Avoid the M25/M1, roadworks will slow you down massively. I went M1/M69/A45/A46/M40 and got stuck on the A45 on the way back but was 2 1/2 hours each way

Disagree. If there is any traffic on the A46 east of Cov it won't be around for long. The rest of the journey should be relatively empty.

Disagree. The A46 and A54 are usually fine around this time - I go to Loughborough from Leamington every so often at about this time. The A43 junction on the M40 is ALWAYS busy and on a Friday it'll be way worse.

ETA: And the M69 is never ever busy.

Cheers for the input everyone.

Hmmm... I'm inclined to travel around Coventry to the M69.
