Not sure all but is it me or have winter tyre prices in the UK shot up this year they are nearly double the price of normal all weather tyres even on the usual suspects of the cheaper websites. Or is it just a case that I am thinking about this the wrong way as the makers will only make a smaller volume of them as such the rrp would be dearer it just seems they are seriously more money than last year??

If you want winter tyres buy early, quite simple, supply and demand dictates price.

It's called 'supply & demand'.

As winter approaches it becomes more difficult to source the tyres as everyone is after the. Hence, the prices go up as it approaches winter.

Had you used some forethought and bought them 3 months ago you would have probably grabbed a bargain.

The market for them in the UK is so much smaller due to the fact most people don't bother.

Winter tyres are compulsary in Germany.

Toaster I think that is the most valid point yet but with what seems our worsening winter weather this could be a new market but our weather is so unpredictable that we could end up with a mild winter again and if that happens then the market dries up again oh I love the unpredictable British weather

I think you'll still always get the "I'm a PH driving god therefore I don't even need wheels, never mind winter tyres"

I bought my spares about a month ago, paid the same as i did last year. Wait till the snow actually comes then they will either be out of stock or mega expensive.

I thought having the snowflake symbol was compulsory in Germany. The snowflake symbol can also be found on some all season tyres.

Fair enough, but it does explain lower prices of snow tyres if the market for them is much bigger through legislation.

Sorry I wasn't trying to pick holes in what you said but rather more concerned that the legislations might have changed again. I should have worded it better.

more people buying them this year due to bad winter last year, and this topic is raised every november.

Also factor in inflation and cost of fuel (to transport tyres to you) and they are more expensive!!

Michelin prices for the wife's Mazda : Pilot Sport 3 £147 a corner, Alpin 4 £160, doesn't seem too bad a difference. Ended up with Vredestein all seasons for £130 as they were in stock.

The tyre dealer I use has had winter tyres on sale most of the year, the prices are higher than his normal tyres all the time although his standard tyres are mainly budgets. Maybe different manufacturing processes and compounds make them dearer.
