Private Plate Advice Please, Retention Of Old Plate?
Discussion
Hello everyone. I know private plates are far from everyone's faviroute subject on pistonheads so I'll apologise in advance but I know there are lots of people on this site that will be able to advise me well. I've ventured into purchasing a private plate for the first time and have just received the V750 - Certificate of Entitlement. Now, transferring the number plate to my current car seems very simple, in that I just fill in the V750 form and send it off.
However, I don't really understand the next part. The current number plate on the car is a regular age related number plate (2002)/ (02). I intend to keep the private number plate for the rest of my life so I will not be selling the plate I've bought when I eventually sell the car at some point in the future. Is it worth retaining the old number plate that is currently on the car? I have no ties to it, but I want to make sure that when I do sell the car, I can sell it with a plate that states it's age. From what I can gather from the V317 - Retaining a vehicle number plate, this will cost me at least an extra £80. What exactly would happen in regards to giving my car a number plate, if I don't retain the old plate, at the time I sell this car or simply buy another car that I'd rather have the private plate on?

When you transfer the plate in the future the DVLA will assign a plate to you car which will most probably be the original number. You don't do anything when you put the private plate on. Just think of it as going over the top of the original plate, not literally though!
Basically you don't need to 'retain' the original plate.

If your current number plate is a 'normal' plate you do not need to retain in 9/10 it will go back onto this plate when you remove your cherished number, if it does not DVLA will issue you with another age related plate.
Just transfer you new number onto the car and do not worry about the plate on the car at the moment.

As others have said don't worry about the number that is currently on your car. I've had a number for 10 years now and every time I've transferred it off the original number has gone back onto it.
Whenever I change my car and the dealer has done the changeover I always take the plates off my car that display my number, just a piece of mind thing really it stops people potentially driving around displaying my number.
