Would it be worth buying written off vehicles in order to salvage their parts to sell for a profit?

Never done anything like this before so I thought I'd ask PH first.

An example- 05' Golf Plus TDI 62k miles.

Front end and wing damage, nothing too bad. Interior airbags have gone off, but that's about it.

How much would you say the 2.0Tdi is worth with the gearbox? Add in all the other bits as in seats and wheels.

Would it be easy to sell? Is there money to be made? Your opinion please?

Thanks.

People already do this, so there must be some money.

When buying second hand parts for my eunos, i keep thinking i could pick up a whole eunos for about £400. .... And then spend £50 on a couple of parts from a car being broken. Doh!

Where do you think you will buy write offs from ?

At an official salvage auction you need a waste licence as you are essentially

buying scrap.smile

Thanks for that, that's something I didn't know.

A friend's brother smashed his golf into somebody's rear end, (Well, in car terms). Insurance has put a salvage value of £750 pounds, should he wish to buy it back. He's offered it to me, otherwise he'll just take the full value for the vehicle damage.

So would it be worth it?

Buy it, clean it as best you can, then put it on Ebay and you should make a few pounds . . . . . if you want to break cars on a commercial basis, you'll need all sorts of environmental controls and licences

If you've been offered a Golf Plus TDi for £750 then you need to tear his arm off. The engine is worth about £900 easy.

Thanks for the replies people.

Just another question, the Golf Plus has a DSG box.

1) Is this worth anything as second hand? - Do they sell well?

2) I know how expensive the DSG can be to repair,

3) In relation to point 2, is the DSG from the plus, the same as my gti???

4) In relation to point 3, if the answer is yes, then surely I should hold onto it as a spare should mine go?

On this example there would be more money is in fixing it up and selling it as a car.

If you can't be bothered sell it as it stands.

Stripping a car and selling all the bits takes lots of time.

Hmmm, there is that too. Am worried about the airbags. I have no idea how much they would cost to replace. Would anyone on here know? - Golf airbags. Steering wheel and passenger dash.

BTW - Thanks to everyone who's replied. This is something I've not done before.

Ebay and specialist breakers.

You do NOT repair cars using new parts.

The yards make their money by buying damaged cars to repair other damaged cars which is why most specialise in a particular make / model.
