Diesel vs Petrol plus any views on Ford Fusion please.
Discussion
Hi, I'm new here and just after some advice please.
I've currently got a Toyota Yaris and am needing a bigger car. I've seen a Ford Fusion for what seems like a good price, 58 plate, 23,000 miles and costs £5300.
Its a 1.4 petrol.
Now I had ideally been thinking I'd get a diesel as husband can get 60mpg in his Mondeo. I get about 48mpg out my 1ltr Yaris. MPG quoted for the Fusion are 41mpg.
The guy at the Ford garage talked me out of diesels saying you need to be doing about 15,000 miles a year to make it worthwhile. I'm only doing about 12,000 miles. Is he right? I always thought the good thing about diesels was that you could keep them going longer. Used to have a Cavalier that had 200,000 miles on the clock.
Anyway I test drove the Fusion and liked it, big boot and drove OK. I know its not the most exciting of cars but I'm quite excited that it has air conditioning and an ipod connector!
So is it worth getting? I've put a £100 deposit down which can be refunded tomorrow if I've changed my mind.

Diesel engines have got a lot more complicated and less hardy over the last few years, so the mileage thing isn't so much of an issue any more. As the guy at the garage says you need to do quite a lot of miles to make diesel worthwhile, and if you drive around town mostly it's even more of an argument for petrol.
As to the car itself, not my choice, but it's based on a Fiesta which was very mass produced, and didn't have too many issues, so it should be OK.
