Decisions decisions..........(what car warning)..

Ladies and Gentlemen, long time lurker first time poster, and I am in a bit of a quandary.

I am lucky enough to receive a car allowance and fuel card through work. I'm even more luck in that I can choose anything I want provided is does 'sensible' (my MD's comment) mpg and is fairly modern.

Now, I am currently renovating a house, and was considering getting a LCI 530d auto touring (in sport guise, and probably not mapped, sorry). However, as these are c£18k I'm a little reluctant to spend that sort of money on a car that could potentially be trashed. So, I am considering 2 motors. Spend £3-4k on a VW transport and turn it into a camper in a year or so when the house is done, and then £13-14k (preferably less considering the house renovation) on something smarter that SWMBO will approve.

I'm considering the following:

1) £3-4k VW transporter and £13-14k 330d saloon

2) £3-4k VW transporter and £13-14k Volvo XC-90

3) £3-4k VW transporter and £13-14k 730d

Any other suggestions?! Must be a diesel (so I can use the fuel card) and have a few niceties such as leather, bluetooth, nav etc etc. I'm 29 without kids, but for some reason a more 'mature' choice of car is unnervingly appealing!

So, the PH masses, over to you, any ideas?!
