Wifeys X plate polo gti needs a new clutch ( original has 150k on it and is becoming a bit on or off )
My local mr clutch in reading have quoted £230 all in with a 2 yr 20k mile waranty.
it will be a valeo clutch aparently.
So any horror stories, is this a reasonable price etc etc.
Before anyone asks I know the clutch for the polo is about £70 - £100 ( probably less if I shop around ) but I dont have the time or the equiptment to fit it myself.
The price seems reasonable although I have yet to get hold of the local speclilist in newbury for a quote.

I think you have to fill something out and take the car back to Mr Clutch after so many miles for a check up to validate the warranty. Usually places like to make in as inconvenient as possible to validate warranties like this. Just so they give out as few as possible.
My girlfriend used them for a service once on her Mini which was just out of warranty (silly girl!). They cocked something up, which resulted in them trying to charge her more £££ and held on to the car for longer than quoted. We had none of it and they returned the car at no extra cost, problem sorted, without much quibble.
Personally, I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. Might be a few quid cheaper, but might not be worth the hassle that it could (potentially) cause. Warranty or no warranty.
I'd find a small reputable local garage or even a mobile mechanic. Mobiles seem to be very cheap.

I've had a few clutches done by Mr Clutch things like Golf Gti, VW caravelle, Fiesta, never had a problem - things like Polo/Golf fairly simple to fix even Mr Clutch can cope with that - its not like you are taking a highly complex machine in for an engine rebuild! Its just a clutch on a Polo.
They tried to onward sell (called me halfway through the job) me a skimming of my flywheel which I felt was not needed and I turned out to be correct. Clutch out lasted the car, original quoted price was competitive. Flywheel skimming would have taken it up to a very neat £299.99 funnily enough.

An underpaid, under-skilled fitter who is under pressure to get cars through the workshop as quickly as possible is likely to make "mistakes" even on relatively simple cars. A favourite is forgetting to re-fit earth cables and frying ECUs, or having a misaligned gearlever after fitting, or clutch judder due to bent fingers on the diaphragm spring amongst a whole heap of others.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
