Hello,

I’m looking to source a GPS tracking system. The use and installation of which I’d like to keep quiet for obvious reasons. I would like some suggestions if possible of suitable units that you may know of or had experience with. My criteria are as follows:

Be small enough to hide with ease
Be waterproof (IPX7 at least)
Be able to sustain temperatures of up to 65 degrees Celsius
Be resistant to shock
Run from an external 12v power source with very low power consumption. The 12v battery must be able to start the engine after approx. 3 months
Be able to run for approximately a week tracking, when the external power is cut and is moved from outside the geo-fence
Have a geo-fence setting when connected to the power source and when disconnected
Have a service to alert the owner when the external power source is triggered…
Or have a trigger input connection
Work as either a Pay As You Go text to operate and alert system, OR on an annual contract with a central server with web location access (preferred)
Be simple to operate and go for long periods of time without any communication (these are for vehicles in long term storage).

We were going to go with the Gamin GTU 10 unit which is priced very cheaply at £180 + £45 annual tracking costs, but unfortunately, when connected to an external power supply the device defaults to the “GPS always on” power mode and I fear will run the 12v battery down too quickly. The unit must be able to stay in geo-fence mode when connected to an external 12v battery and wake up every 30 mins to check it’s still within the geo-fence.

I hope someone can help!

Many thanks,

Dan

If you can run a maintance charger on the battery that would solve most of your problems

Solar battery charger ?

I'm stumped , however don't think what you need actually exist, everything needs a power source

It can be connected to the 12v battery.

I have used several devices in the past that use PAYG SIM cards, but we'd like something like the Garmin unit which uses an annual contract so you don't need to keep topping up the SIM card. and there's no worry of the SIM getting cut off due to lack of use.

Have you asked Garmin whether the GPS module used in that product can be configured for a different power saving mode? If it can be, that could save you a lot of time and money looking for an alternative.

Yes, I have, they can't. I'm a Garmin dealer as well!

Do a search for Gotek7, my business partner wrote the software, we have our own systems but i think the high capacity magnetic tracker would work perfectly for you, you could leave it connected to a charger hidden from view..... http://www.gotek7.com/

Failing that give me a shout, we can supply a tracking device thats connected to the power but goes to sleep when the ignition is off but gives a 'heartbeat' every 12 hours. It just wakes up and make sure everything is fine, then goes back to sleep. We also have Geofences and polygons on aerial mapping that can notify via text or email if the device moves. It uses very very little power and we have both internet and mobile phone apps available. Ill do you a good PH deal wink

The unit is one tiny box with antennas and modem and very easy to hide away.

This looks like what we'd need, but at £450 + £180pa it's quite expensive. But it is Thatcham approved. http://www.chipandtrace.com/chip-trace-pro/

This may work too: http://www.mtrackonline.co.uk/overview.html
