(mods, please don't move this to employment matters. may GG is ok but still...)

If it snows enough to gridlock the roads, and those of us who have jobs, especially those who live 30 miles from work, will we be able to stay home? what are our rights?

thanks

You can stay at home any day you like, getting paid may be the problem. I work on the principal if I can get in I don't pay those who don't turn up. If I can't get in I send those home who go in and pay them for the day.
I live the furthest away from work of all the staff.

Sounds right.

If you can get in, go in.

Last year and the year before that loads of our lot stayed home. Those who have laptops and remote access "Worked from home" those who didn't are generally lower down the ladder, but I think were docked a day's pay for it.
I got to work. In a fwd car on summer slicks. In a fiat Punto in '09/10 and in my Lotus in '10/11 winter.
I made a point of getting there, because I couldn't really do my job from home and wouldn't let them take money off me on principal.
Made me laugh when the boss' strumpet didn't bother coming in despite being a director of the company and living literally less than a mile from the office.

i work 30ish miles from home, i made it in everyday when it snowed last year, but a guy i work with who lives 10 miles from work refused to drive in. i think its up to you and your work place as to how committed you are to getting to work. I personally didnt find it that bad to drive in, take your time etc set off earlier than you need to blah blah blah. I await the flaming. (we dont get paid for time off be the way)

But do you live in the most difficult place to get out of when it does snow badly?

I.E. you could live the furthest away but if your journey in is all main roads that are gritted and had a snow plough run down them then you can still get in. Yet the guy who lives closer, but out the way a bit, and his cul-de-sac is now snow 3 ft deep and so he can't even get out the front door? Do you say sorry fella, I got here, no payment for you?

I had people that phoned in because they couldn't make the mile journey. I made sure I personally answered every call those days when I made the 60 mile journey.

pfft a mile

Even if you can't get the car off the drive (my dad couldn't get his lexus off the drive in a little snow!) at a mile you just don some gloves, a hat, a scarf and a thick coat and walk in. Probably quicker than if you did manage to get the car out.

I made it in every day and I have a 47 mile journey. Had a manager at the time who couldn't make the mile or so journey from their house.

Last year I had a driver doing a lot of work for me, about 30 jobs a month, chauffeuring clients around. He rang me and said he couldn't do the Saturday jobs (this was on a Friday evening) as it "Might snow" punch

Needless to say I've not used him since.

I have a 36 mile trip in, didnt miss a day, I just got in the 21 Quadra. Other people from miles closer were using it as an excuse to skive a free day off.

Slighty O/T but we've had a wedding invite rejection "because it might snow that night".

I'm not kidding.

I think the way he said it was...

Can't get in = no pay

Can get in = day at work

Can get in but boss can't/site can't open = paid day off

I made it to work on a day with lots of snow. What is however a mystery is hwo someone in my office who lived closer to work but on the same line as me, didn't manage to get there due to "train problems" which I never even knew about..........

if you didn't skive off work you'd be able to afford a wedding in the summer!

Are you thinking that it is your "right" not to show up to work if it snows and that there's some sort of "oooman rights" backing for this?

haha...

Its hard to skive off work due to snow when you work from home smile

And I can prove beyond reasonable doubt that winter weddings are NOT cheaper than summer. Picking New Years Eve is not the most pennywise decision ever.biggrin

oooh no. I never missed a day the last 2 winters. Just my current job is in Lundin and I'm concerned that I'll get stuck on the m11 / m25 with my winter tyres nullified by morons who can't think ahead to buy them, or who haven't skill enough to drive on summers!

My excess is 250 squid, so is a day off work all that bad? and what are my rights? I already had the argument about local workers skiving off rather than walk 30 mins, and they boil my urine.

So please don't judge me - I WANT to go in to work, just don't want a smashed car.

I told a few I'd go out and collect them in my car!!
Good thing with our company is, we don't pay the first 3 days of sick leave. It almosts puts and end to short term absence. Strange how there's always a spike the weekend of payday!!
