My little sis is looking for a mid size SUV - she lives in the country and needs something that can ship the dogs around in, lend to hubby for pheasant shooting and pull a small horse box around with.

She's narrowed the search down to a 36k 2007 HYUNDAI SANTA FE 2.2 CRTD CDX and a particulary clean 90k miles 2007 Land Rover Freelander 2 Td4 GS both costing around £12k.

Her head says the Santa Fe and her heart says the LR so she foolishly asked her brother for his advice. Now I've never had a Freelander but gut feels says a 90k Freelander is not a receipe for trouble free motoring.

These are the two adverts... What do you guys and gals think?

Sante Fe

Freelander

Pictures of my sister will not be provided in exchange for advice!

Santa Fe's have got quite a decent rep. The interior isn't particularly interesting. However, I think you're right about the high risks with a 90k freelander.

Neither.

Kia Sorento.
You do realise that the Sorento and Santa Fe share the same engine/platform?

Santa Fe is nice my uncle has one, rather cheapish feel interior but great value and he regularly tows a boat and says it very good for towing!

He did have several Jeeps before and he far prefers this for running costs and value.

Sorry but Santa Fe's just smack of council, really really hate Korean 4X4's just too try hard wish I could afford a LR to me.

The Landrover would worry me as the bills could be huge, I believe the reliability issue's have bee nrectified but the mileage I'd guess would dictate potential bills.

I'm clearly biased but Octavia Scout? The Forester would be a good call.

Also, OP, you need to figure out exactly what she wants to tow, and the gross weight of it, before she decides on a car that's no use to her. Gross weight of an Ifor 511 is 2.8T. A Freelander's not going to pull that, dunno about the Hyundai.
Aren't the rules for towing - like max weight changing soon?

Parents have a Sante fe. Tows a 1400kg 26' caravan down to the south of france with ease. Uncle has a 57 plate freelander and it's in the garage for the 2nd time this month with alot less millage than 90k.

How about a Defender, deprecation should be negligible if bought sensibly?

The Santa Fe thet I had was bulletproof. Bought new - owned it for 8 years and the only thing that got replaced was the battery.

8 years out your original tyres and brakes? Impressive! tongue out
It spent 8 years parked up and only needed the battery when he came to sell it, obviously.

pmsl.

I kid you not - the tyres and brakes were original.

The car was an automatic, and the the only bends I negotiate here are when I turn in, or out of, a junction frown

If I recall, it had somewhere in the region of 70k on the clock when I chopped it in. Urban US commuting is kind to cars - no hills, no bends, no speed sleep

I stand corrected - it was actually 7 years that I owned it. My model was one of the original underpowered petrol V6 engines (2WD) (not sure that they had the same model line up in the UK). Damn thing couldn't pull yer grannie out of bed in the morning. It was a fairly comfy ride though. My wife currently has a Mercury Mariner (a rebranded Ford Escape) and it rides like a truck.

I would buy another Hyundai in an instant - prices have shot up over the last 4/5 years though - Toyota over here see Hyundai as their biggest threat.
